In 1941, the German Africa Corps under General Erwin Rommel, stationed in North Africa in support of their Italian allies in Libya, dominated the area for a long time due to their modern equipment and good leadership. In the heavy desert actions of 1941 and 1942 the Africa Corps forced the British forces, which were numerically superior, right back to the gates of Cairo. But in 1943, after the second Battle of El Alamein, they were hemmed in by the British and Americans and had no alternative but to surrender and retreat.

On 6th June 1944, in Operation Overlord, the Allies landed in Normandy. These included British infantry regiments who, in addition to the traditional 1937 webbing, also had new equipment such as the Mk III helmet and battle jerkin. Armed with the Sten sub-machine-gun, the no. 4 Mk I rifle, the PIAT anti-tank weapon, the Bren machine-gun and handy grenade launchers, they forced the defenders out of the landing zones Juno, Sword and Gold and during the followingdays and weeks smashed the German resistance in Quistreham, Arromanches and Caen.

At the beginning of the war the German sailors ship number was well below the standard of the enemy fleets, but despite this they didtheir best to relieve the pressure on their comrades on land. The simplest way to achieve this was, by means of a substantial increase in the submarine fleet, to wage a tonnage war on all the merchant ships making for England or other allied countries. By the end of the war almost all the large warships had been sunk or lay damaged in the harbours. Of the 1,154 submarines built, 751 were sunk at sea.

The kit and weapons carried by the infantry were decisively improved over the long war years. To enable them to keep up with the tank units, the gunners were upgraded to mechanized infantry. The K98 carbine was gradually replaced by semi-automatic weapons such as the MP40, 43 rifle and 44 automatic rifle, in order to increase the combat capability and fire power of the individual soldiers. Bazookas and anti-tank rocket launchers would enable the infantrymen to combat enemy tanks at close range.
