The USS Ronald Reagan CVN-76 is the ninth aircraft carrier of the Nimitz Class
and is also the most modern vessel of this type. She was called after the 40th
President of the United States of America who died on 5th June 2004. Compared
with her sister ships this vessel has a number of electronic modifications such
as an integrated communications system. The most striking external alternation
however is the island; it is larger and higher than its predecessors, of more
angular design and also 600 tonnes heavier. The vessel was launched on 5th March
2001 and went into service on 12th July 2003. She has an overall length of 332.85
metres. This carrier has a full load displacement of over 100,000 tonnes, reaches
a speed of over 30 knots and can operate for about 20 years on one charge of
uranium. She is powered by two nuclear reactors supplying four main engines
that operate four five-bladed screws. The carrier is equipped with 4 catapults.
The air group consists of over 85 aircraft. The USS Ronald Reagan has a crew
of about 3200 seamen and needs 2480 additional people for flying operations.

AG/Germany scale model kit #5004
1/144 German Sub Type XXI U-2540/U-2 Submarie kit
The type XXI was the most
influential submarine design of World War II. When it went into service it was
the most advanced submarine in the world. Essential to the success of the craft
was its design for dived operation. Compared with previous submarines it incorporated
three times the battery capacity for submerged travel. It reached the sensational
dived speed of 17 knots. In addition to the diesel engines and electric motors
it had what was called electric "creeping" motors. This gave an almost
silent submerged movement. Most of the defence artillery was eliminated in order
to provide space for extensive detection equipment and equipment for deceiving
the enemy, maximum battery capacity and an ingenious snorkel system. By way
of offensive weapons it had 6 bow torpedo tubes. Although 118 of the type XXI
submarine were built, not many of them were used and several were sunk by Allied
aircraft in their home waters. After the war the U 2540, which had been scuttled
on 4th May 1945, was raised and modernised. It was the prototype of all modern
post-war submarines and was made using a revolutionary sectional building system
for the first time. The superior technology of these submarines was adopted
by the Americans, British, French and Soviets and incorporated in their own
submarines.

In January 1937,
when the keel for a new Royal Navy battleship was laid, a new vessel came into
existence which with its concentration of 356 mm heavy artilleryin quadruple
turrets took English shipbuilding in a totally new direction. In 1938, the ship
was launched and named the King George V and in December 1940 she went into
service as the first of five sister ships, to be followed in 1941 by the Prince
of Wales and the Duke of York and in 1942 by the Anson and the Howe. In the
following war years these ships formed the core of the battle fleet and were
used in all theatres of war. The King George V had her baptism of fire duringthe
pursuit and ultimate sinking of the Bismarck. She then served in the North Sea
and the Mediterranean before going back to the shipyard in 1944. By the end
of the war she had undertaken missions in the Pacific, often together with the
US Navy. In 1958 the King George V was broken up.

The armoured warship
Admiral Graf Spee went into service on 6th January 1936, as the new flagship
of the German navy. On 13th December 1939, at the mouth of the River Plate,
the Graf Spee ran into a British cruiser squadron. The Graf Spee was able to
break out of the battle that followed to her own advantage, but had to make
a run for the neutral harbour of Montevideo in order to repair the damage. On
17th December, after makeshift repairs, Captain Langsdorff had to leave the
harbour. He subsequently scuttled his own ship. Public attention was recently
focussed on the wreck of the Admiral Graf Spee again, when it became known that
Uruguayan contractors wished to raise a major part of the ship.

The U-Boot type
VII-C is the best known German submarine from World War II. It was built in
large numbers and upgraded several times. This type represents the ultimate
high point of the submarine era. Equipped with four bow and one stern torpedo
the VII-C was a fearsome weapon. The task assigned to the German submarines
was trade warfare. They were designed to disrupt England's supply lines and
innumerable sunken ships bear witness to that. The "Grey Wolves" of
the Atlantic made war on escort convoys and hunted in packs. Accustomed to success,
however, the period from 1943 was devastating for the German submarines: the
hunters became the hunted. New search equipment tracked the German submarines
mercilessly and turned them into steel coffins for innumerable German submarine
crews. The type VII-C submarine illustrates the rise and fall of German submarine
warfare.

The first of a total of 91 type VII C/41 submarines went into service in the
summer of 1943. At that time the operating conditions for the submarine crews
had totally changed. The tactic of "hunting in packs" used in 1941-42
only rarely led to the successful tracking of convoys and the sinking of individual
ships. Modern escort protection forces were successful in shielded the ships
and special sub-chaser fighter planes widely patrolled the sea areas where there
were submarines. In order to be better able to defend themselves on the surface
against surprise attacks from the air, the VII C/41s received an enlarged fin
superstructure known as the "large glasshouse". The so-called fin
IV had aft on its upper platform two 20 mm twin anti-aircraft guns and on a
lower platform one 37 mm M42U anti-aircraft cannon. Another feature of these
submarines was a snorkel mast that could be brought up from the deck when surfaced
to take in fresh air and let out the waste air. Thus the accumulators could
also be operated at higher speed under water and with a full load in daytime.
There were 5-man life rafts stored in four water-tight containers on the fore-deck.
Thanks to the improvements to structural steel, submarine VII C/41 could dive
down to 250 m. With losses of 44 submarines, by the end of the Battle of the
Atlantic, type VII C/41 submarines had damaged or sunk 38 Allied ships with
a total GRT of 138,622. 1444 members of VII C/41 crews were killed in battle
or in accidents.

After the US Pacific fleet had been seriously weakened at Pearl Harbor, at the
beginning of the war in the Pacific much of the responsibility in the battle
against the Japanese expeditionary forces rested on the shoulders of the American
submariners. The submarines of the Gato Class were large fleet submarines that
had been specially developed for use in the wide expanses of the Pacific Ocean.
Due to their size and equipment they could remain in non-stop service for 75
days. Between 1940 and 1944, 77 Gatos were build at four different shipyards.
Together with the Balao and the Trench Class they formed the backbone of the
US submarine fleet. Most of these subs went to the Pacific, but a few were also
used in the Atlantic. These submarines were extremely successful. Not only did
they sink a large number of irreplaceable freighters and tankers, but they also
decimated the Imperial naval fleet. The most grievous losses were the aircraft
carriers Shokaku, Taiyo, Unyo and Taiho. Developed for use in the expanses of
the Pacific, the Gato was much larger than for example the German type VII submarine.
It had a length of 95 m, a beam of 8.20 m and a draught of 4.60 m. Its displacement
was 1825 tons surfaced and 2410 tons dived. The diesel engine gave it a speed
of 20.75 knots on the surface. This item does not ship outside of North America.

Swarms of them emerged from the morning mist, launched their lightening attack
and disappeared as quickly as they had come. They were called the "Greyhound
of the Sea". At the beginning of World War II the Friedrich Lürssen
shipyard, Vegesack carried out successful pioneer work and developed a fast,
seaworthy type of speedboat that was capable of top speed even in heavy seas,
had brilliant manoeuvrability and was built until the end of the war without
major modifications. These speedboats, also called S-Boats, generally proved
their worth on escort and security missions, sea reconnaissance, mine warfare
and in particular in combat against enemy submarines and surface units. They
operated primarily off the Dutch and French coasts, along the English coast
and in the Channel as well as in the North Sea and the Baltic and were also
used in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. The ultimate variant to be operational
in significant numbers was the so-called S-Boat type S-100, which was produced
from 1943 onwards and is reputed to be the best fast patrol boat of its time.
The S-100 class was also called the "calotte", as it had a rounded
armoured bridge made of welded segments (approx 10-12 mm armour plated steel)
It was driven by 3 Daimler-Benz MB 511-V engines giving it an overall capacity
of approx. 7500 hp and developing an outstanding speed of 43.5 knots (briefly
accelerating to 48 knots).

(Unterseeboot) Type VIIB The Type VII U-Boats, under the command of Admiral
Doenitz, were the principle German weapons in the Battle of the Atlantic. In
this battle, Germany hoped to cut off the convoy supply lines to Great Britain
and force the British to sue for peace. The U-Boats caused great havoc to the
Atlantic convoys during the early years of WWII but by the end of 1943 they
were outnumbered and outgunned. The Type VIIB U-99 was commanded by Kapitan
Kretschmer and sank 44 ships before being sunk herself by the British destroyer
"Walker". Most of the crew were taken prisoner.

Type description Aircraft carrier
Year/Period 1939
The "Graf Zeppelin" was the one and only German aircraft carrier,
however it was never completed or used. As the sole German vessel in this class
it deserves a special place. On 16.11.1935 the German naval high command issued
an order for it to be built by the "Deutsche Werke Kiel AG". It was
to by crewed by a company of 1720 and carry 110 aircraft. Water displacement
: 27,750 tonnes. It was launched on 8.12.1939. However by 1939 doubts had already
arisen about its capabilities. In April 1940 construction work was halted and
in July the "Graf Zeppelin" was towed to Gotenhafen and following
a general stoppage of shipbuilding in April 1943 it was taken to Stettin. On
25.4.1945 the G.Z. was sunk at its berth by a demolition squad, however in March
1947, it was raised by the Soviet navy and later that June it was finally sunk
by torpedos.

Based on the proven
design principles of the 209 Class of submarines, plus some of the innovative
features of the 212A class, HDW developed the 214 Class. It was eminently suitable
for a broad spectrum of applications, both in shallow and deep water areas.
Due to its flexible combination of sensors and weapons and the fuel cell power
plant that is independent of external air, the 214 Class is predestined for
missions against enemy submarines and surface vessels, reconnaissance and surveillance,
support for operational units and special missions. The fuel cell power plant
enables the submarine to remain under water for much longer. This new type of
engine and the reduction in the overall signatures ensure that the 214 Class
vessels are extremely difficult to locate. At present there are seven 214 Class
units under construction: four for the Greek Navy (built by the Thyssen Krupp
Marine Systems Werften HDW in Kiel and the Hellenic Shipyards in Greece) and
three for the Navy of South Korea (Shipyard: Hyundai Heavy Industries in Korea).

The Flower Class corvettes
will always be associated with the Battle of the North Atlantic, even thought
they were also used in all theatres of war in World War II. Alongside other
escort ships she bore the main burden of the battle against the German submarines.
The escort ships of this class were derived from the collaboration between the
British Admiralty and the Smiths Dock Company, which in 1938 had a successful
design for a commercial whaler called the Southern Pride. The main feature of
this original design was that in accordance with merchant shipping practice
it could easily be built in many small British dockyards and its basic engines
could be handled by civilian dockyards. Sixty Flower Class corvettes had been
ordered before war broke out and by the end of 1940 at total of 141 of the original
design had been ordered. The first vessel (launched on 24.1.1940) was completed
in 5 Months, the subsequent ones at a rate of one every twenty three days. Once
it had been decided that corvettes were no longer to be used as coastal escort
ship, but on the high seas, some modifications had to be made. Later these vessels
were given a different hull with extended forecastle that improved their thrust
and overhang to protect them against the Atlantic seas. In the course of the
war the corvettes were equipped, among other things, with radar, more and more
powerful anti-aircraft weapon.Total build: 256, Displacement: 940 tons, capacity:
2750 shp, speed: 16 knots, crew: 47 men

The small and manoeuvrable
British torpedo boats of this class proved highly successful weapns of attack
in the Mediterranean theatre of operations during World War Two. Under cover
of night and with radar support, the wooden boats moved i formation to attack
enemy coastal vessels with their torpedos. After the attack the boats veered
off quickly to escape the fire of enemy escort vessels and to watch the success
of their attack. In this way the Allies kept their supply routes open especially
in the Mediterranean. The advantages of manoeuvrability and speed far outweighed
in the limitations regardin range and light construction. Powered by three 4.050
PS Packard engines, the boats had a maximum speed of 40 knots (72 km/h).

H.M.S. Bounty
One of the most famous vessels in maritime history is the HMS Bounty, a sailing
ship that became known for the bold mutiny that took place on board. In 1787
Captain William Bligh was ordered by King George III to bring bread-fruit trees
from Tahiti to the West Indies in the Bounty. Captain Bligh ruled with an iron
hand and continually reduced the rations of his crew. On 28th April 1789 the
famous mutiny occurred. Bligh and 18 of his henchmen were set adrift in a boat
but, after a veritable odyssey of a voyage, succeeded in making their way back
to England. The rest of the crew decided to remain in the region and settled
on Pitcairn Island, far from the shipping routes. To prevent discovery, the
Bounty was ultimately burned by her former crew in 1790.

ordered by Congress towards the end of the eighteenth century. She was launched
in May 1797 and was considerably heavier then her sister ship the "Constitution".
This imposing man-o'-war had excellent sailing characteristics and saw hard
service with the US Navy. During the 1812 war she captured the British frigate
"Macedonian". Later in her naval career she was rebuilt and refitted
many times. In the confusion of the American Civil War the "United States"
was sunk by Union seamen in Norfolk during the surrender of Norfolk harbour.
She was finally broken up in 1866.

Type description sailing ship
Year/Period 1817
Most sailing ships
achieved fame in seafaring history through sea battles, but some gained it through
exploration. On 27th December 1831, H.M.S. Beagle, a brig built in 1817, sailed
from Devenport, England on a five year expedition round the globe. At the invitation
of the Captain and naturalist Robert Fitzroy, the young natural scientist Charles
Darwin was also on board. The observations made by him during the voyage on
the evolution of life and the origin of species formed the basis of the Darwin
Theory, which made him one of the most important scientists of all time. This
historic voyage went via Brazil, Chile, the Galapagos Islands, Tahiti, New Zealand
and the Cape of Good Hope and back to England, where they arrived on 2.10.1836.
Many species were brought back with them as specimens of their revolutionary
findings.
