The Titanic - one of the most up-to-date luxury liners of her time - achieved
fame due to the tragic events that overtook her during her maiden voyage on 14th
April 1912. The "Queen of the Sea" was to carry 1,316 passengers from
Southampton to New York for the White Star Line. During the night at about 23.40
hours, at latitude 41.54 degrees north and longitude 50.24 degrees west in the
Atlantic, the British steamship hit an iceberg that tore a 100 m gash in her starboard
side. When the Titanic sank at about 0.20 hours on 15th April 1,503 of the 2,206
people on board lost their lives. The 46,329 BRT vessel had a length of 267 m
and a displacement of 66,000 tons. With her 9 decks and in particular her 15 watertight
bulkheads, the ship was considered to be unsinkable. The Titanic steams on in
the popular imagination, not least thanks to the James Cameron film that won 11
Oscars. Decades after she went down the passenger liner has lost none of her attraction.
When the wreck was discovered in 1985, one question was finally answered: the
ship had in fact broken in two. At the same time, however, the mystique surrounding
the Titanic continued to grow, as mini-submarines brought back to the surface
pieces of that once so elegant ocean-going world.

On April 10.1912,
R.M.S. Titanic with 2200 passengers on board left Southhampton on its maiden
voyage to New York. It has been built by Harland and Wolff in Belfast and offered
its passengers every possible comfort. This most luxurious liner, considered
unsinkable at the time, measured 270 m in length and 28 m in width with a maximum
speed of 24 knots. On the evening of April 14.1912 the Titanic collided with
an iceberg that had suddenly appeared out of nowhere. In the resulting panic
it was impossible to abandon ship in an orderly and organised manner. Within
3 hours this giant liner sank, taking 1500 passengers down with it.

The Savannah was
the first nuclear powered cargo/passenger ship in the world, built by the NY
Shipbuilding Corp. in Camden, USA. She was launched in March 1962 and thus demonstrated
for the first time the technical possibilities of nuclear powered merchant vessels.
However, it was never the intention to be commercially competitive. The Savannah
had a capacity of 14,000 tons and could accommodate 60 passengers and a 124
men crew. The cruising speed was 21 knots and the fuel store was sufficient
for an uninterrupted stretch of 336,000 nautical miles (622,608 km). For passenger
operation she even had comfortable rooms, a cinema, a library and a swimming
pool. The Savannah was taken out of service in 1972.

Speed 16,5 knots
The construction
of the so-called C-3 cargo vessels began during World War II, after the famous
"Liberty" and "Victory" ships. This standardized type of
ship overtook all other ships as it was more modern and longer and could also
reach a higher speed. After the Second World War these ships were converted
into ordinary freighters and sold to various shipping companies. The Hawaiian
Pilot was built in 1944 and first went into service as the USS Burleigh. After
the war ended it was acquired and refitted by the Matson Navigation Company
and mainly travelled the Los Angeles, San Francisco and Hawaii routes. The cargo
consisted of normal consumer goods of all kinds and agrarian products primarily
bound for the West Coast of the USA. The vessel had a cruising speed of 16.5
knots and a total cargo capacity of 12,500 tonnes.

Type description English teaclipper built in Scotland in 1869
Year/Period 1869
Origin GB
The clipper Cutty Sark represents
one of the most romantic ages in the history of ocean travel. She was launched
on the River Clyde, Scotland, in the year 1869, and spent most of her time transporting
goods around the world. In 1885, she beat the Thermopylae in a famous race from
Australia to England. The Cutty Sark made the trip in 73 days, the Thermopylae
took 80 days. Today, the Cutty Sark retains the glamour of her wind-blown past.
Resting in dry berth in Greenwich, England, the Cutty Sark lives on as the last
link to an age when the proud and beautiful clippers ruled the seas.

Type description Warship
Year/Period 800 - 1000
Origin DK/S/N
From the end of
the eighth century AD, Vikings originating from Scandinavia regularly appeared
in Great Britain and on the European mainland on raiding expeditions in their
Longships. These highly sea worthy fighting ships of around 20 metres (66 feet)
in length had a bow at both ends, enabling them to beach and/or launch in either
direction. The shallow draught of only 1.5 metres (5 feet) also gave the Vikings
the option of sailing or rowing up inland waterways and rivers, allowing them
to raid areas deep in the hinterland. With these fast (a speed of 20 knots)
and very manoeuvrable fighting ships also known as "Dragon Boats",
the Vikings ventured as far away as Iceland, Greenland and even North America,
as excavations at settlements have proven.
