In the early fifties,
BMW were investigating the possibility of offering minicars to meet the requirements
of the post-war market. A most promising starting point appeared to be a licensing
agreement with the Italian Iso SpA works, who had developed the Isetta. From
1953 onwards BMW would manufacture the Isetta, producing some variants under
licence. The BMW Isetta 250, which appeared on the market in 1955 and is still
regarded as a typical product of the German economic miracle period, is worthy
of particular attention. The key feature of the idiosyncratic Isetta was the
front door that took the steering column with it on a cardan joint when it was
opened. This snug little ball of a car was driven by a 12 bhp half-throttled
250 cc single-cylinder, four-stroke engine developed from the BMW R 25/2, so
that the Isetta could even be driven on a motor bike licence. The top speed
of the Isetta 250 was stated to be 85 kph. The engine was located on the right
in front of the rigid rear axle. Externally this mid-engined car differed from
its Italian predecessor in that it had separate headlamp shells fixed to the
side walls of the body and naturally the BMW badge that was attached below the
windscreen. By 1962 over 160,000 Isettas in different versions had rolled off
the BWM production line.

While working on
the Golf Giorgio Giugiaro had the fascinating idea of a sports coupé
based on this short and manoeuvrable chassis and put it to Lotz the VW boss,
however he turned it down. Nevertheless Giugiaro worked on a design which he
submitted to Karmann. The project was also presented to the new VW chief Leiding,
but he gave no financial support. Karmann financed it himself. They agreed to
call it the Scirocco after a Saharan wind and to provide it with Golf I technology.
The good chassis was developed at VW while the extremely modern engine came
from Audi and had a cog-belt driven overhead camshaft as well as bucket tappet
valve timing gear. The Scirocco had a kerb weight of only 800kg and therefore
the 50, 70 and 85 bhp models were already capable of a respectable performance.
The coupé came out 3 months before the Golf in April 1974. In June 1976
the Scirocco GTI appeared with an Audi 80 GTE engine that, thanks to its mechanical
fuel injection system, developed 110 bhp and 185 km/h and reached 100 km/h in
only 8.8 seconds - a brilliant performance for that time that was to make the
GTI a legend. The 1978 model was given a facelift including wider bumpers and
indicators that curved round the edges of the bodywork as well as a decorative
frame round the radiator grille and a black B-post. Production of the Scirocco
I came to an end in February 1981.

The up-to-the-minute
180 range, given the internal works designation W 120, was introduced in September
1953. The extremely positive response to the first new design to come from Mercedes-Benz
after the war can be primarily attributed to three factors. To begin with, this
completely new vehicle had an integral body and frame - an absolute first in
the history of the company. Also, the type 180 appeared with a modern Ponton
body distinguished by its rounded lines. Flanges are now only visible on the
fully integrated mudguards; the running boards and stand-alone headlamps have
disappeared. Only the classic radiator grille remains. Apart from the unusually
modern concept for the conditions at that time, there was also a 3.criterion:
the handling performance of the 180, which was far superior to that of its predecessor,
the 170. Many features of the interior originated in the 170, but due to the
fine workmanship and clear lay-out this was no detriment. The only aspect that
gave rise to criticism was that it had the same 4-cylinder engine as its predecessor,
the M 136 that delivered 52 bhp, but this in no way diminished the success of
the 180. The Ponton, which also included the type 180 D that came out in 1954,
represented a milestone for Mercedes-Benz. The W 120, on the one hand, established
the legend of long life and economy, and on the other, thanks to the unit assembly
system, it effected the change-over from manual motor manufacture to mas-production.
In 9 years - 440.000 examples were built.

1/18 VW Corrado VR6, Aqua Blue
Type description
sports car
Year/Period 1993
Origin D
The VW Corrado,
whose name is derived from the Spanish word correr (= to run), was presented
for the first time in 1988. This fastest production VW sports coupé to
date was remarkable primarily for its shape and for its rear spoiler, which
in the European model was raised automatically at 120 km/h and lowered again
at 20 km/h. There were numerous tuning possibilities for the Corrado, which
made it very popular with a younger clientele. After the works holidays in 1991
these models were shown in Germany with a 16V and also a VR6 power unit. The
interior of the Corrado in particular had been given an individual design, as
it previously had too many similarities to the Passat. Thanks to a Plus chassis,
the VR6 offered almost optimum road holding and therefore real-ly sporty driving.
In addition the features supplied as standard were unusual at that time, including
ABS, power steering, height-adjustable seats. The six-cylinder engi-ne of the
2.9 litre VR6 delivered 190 bhp and it was said to have a top speed of 233 km/h.
As to acceleration, this car only needed 7 seconds to get from 0 to 100 km/h.
Production of the Corrado ceased in 1995. In the seven years it was pro-duced
about 97,500 rolled off the lines.
