By 2001, that is unusually early, Renault had begun developing the chassis at Enstone and the new 3 litre V10 induction engine RS 23 at Viry-Chƒtillon. At the beginning of the 2003 season they had perfected an 800 bhp car, in which the chassis and engine had been optimally balanced. With some justification therefore Renault had great expectations for a successful season. Thanks to the driving skills of Fernando Alonso, who ended the 2003 season at number six, and the 33 points contributed by the talented Italian driver Jarno Trulli, Renault successfully achieved the 4th rank they had aimed at in the constructors' standings.

Following the brilliant triumphs of the past few years and the 2002 season in particular, there was no reason for Ferrari to extensively redesign their vehicle. That's why this high-performance racing car differs from its predecessor in a few details only. What is new, though, is the type 052 V-10-engine, generating some 890 hp. The season, however, went anything but to plan and after the race in Canada, Ferrari had still not marked up the points lead they had expected. Despite the Brazilian's win at Silverstone and the triumphs of the German driver in Monza and the USA, the competition was clearly hot on their heels. And it was not until the very last race, virtually on the final straight, that the nail-biting racing season was decided. The driver from Kerpen claimed his 4th World Championship title in succession and Ferrari won the Constructors' Championship for the 5th time running.

The design of Team McLaren Mercedes' MP4-20 was heavily influenced by major changes to the rules for the 2005 season. Following its track debut during January testing, the potential in the car was immediately obvious to the team. Kimi Raikkonen took the first victory in the MP4-20 at the Spanish Grand Prix in May. In the following 14 races Kimi and his team-mate Juan Pablo Montoya secured 9 dominant wins between them in one of the most exciting and competitive seasons for years. Juan Pablo, who joined the team for 2005, took his first victory for Team McLaren Mercedes at the British Grand Prix. As with the 2003 Drivers' standings, Team McLaren Mercedes and Kimi made a convincing runner-up to the World Champions.

From 1999 to 2005 the constructors' world championship title went without interruption to Ferrari. At the beginning of the 2005 season Ferrari altered the bodywork only in minor details. In particular the design represents Ferrari's more exhaustive interpretation of the 2005 technical regulations. The main elements, relating to aerodynamics, are more advanced, the chassis is lighter, the shape has been revised, the engine cover has been redesigned, the entire rear end has been changed in an attempt to get the most out of the size of the gearbox, which is smaller and made from titanium and carbon fiber. The F2005 represents the final evolution in a line of Ferrari Formula 1 cars fitted with a ten cylinder engine. Much attention was paid to performance and optimization of the materials used as well as quality control, in order to increase performance levels with maximum safety.

The Ferrari Enzo Ferrari, named after the legendary company founder, was launched in 2002 as an outstanding expression of the concept of extreme sports car, developed for road use,yet epitomising the most advanced concepts of Formula 1 racing technology. The air duct divides the arrow-shaped front of the car so that the 225 kg V12 power plant with 6,0 l capacity and 660 HP performance gets sufficient cooling. The typical round taillights are beside the rear spoiler that reacts to the driving speed. As usual the body design is from Pininfarina. The acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h is reached by the Enzo Ferrari in 3,65 sec., the sprint from 0 to 200 km/h in 9.5 seconds. The maximum speed is officially announced to be over 350 km/h. The Enzo Ferrari will be produced in a limited number of 399 units.

The 235 bhp Fiat 131 Abarth is reputed to one of the best rally cars of the late 1970s. Approved for international racing from 1976, the Fiat 131 won the World Rally Championship in the following year. The title was successfully defended in 1978. However the 1980 Monte Carlo Rally, with team Röhrl-Geistdörfer, is reputed to be the most important in the car's racing history. Finally Fiat had taken the Monte Carlo title after a gap of 52 years. The rally is extremely difficult: snow, fog and some sun dictated the pace, dangerous patches of ice formed overnight, which the perfectionist Röhrl took faultlessly and with a steady nerve at 180 km/h. The team easily won at Monte Carlo and ended the year with the driver's world championship title.

The new 2 + 2 seater from Ferrari was shown to the public for the first time anywhere in the world at the Detroit Motor Show in January 2004. The name of this de luxe sports coupé with an unusually roomy interior pays tribute to Sergio Scaglietti who built Ferrari bodies for many years. As usual the design is by Pininfarina. It recalls the shape and in particular the side recesses and large front grille of the Ferrari 375 Mille Miglia that Roberto Rossellini ordered from his father for Ingrid Bergmann back in 1954. Under the bonnet of this front-wheel drive 540 bhp 612 Scaglietti there is a 6-litre, 12-cylinder engine (= 612) that accelerates it from 0 to 100 kph in just 4.4 seconds. It can sprint rom 0 to 200 in kph in only 15.5 seconds and has a top speed of 321 kph. The gear lever is a paddle shift on the steering wheel but it can also be changed over to fully-automatic mode at the touch of a button.

The BMW 635 CSi exhibited in 1978 embodied everyday usefulness, comfort and sportiness like no other model in the E24 series. The BMW offered a luxurious amount of space, its well-padded dashboard was dominated by three large round indicators. Thanks to computer-controlled chassis and suspension and carefully thought-out engine technology, the 365 CSi offered noteworthy positive driving characteristics. The six-cylinders in-line engine of the 3.5 litre sports coupé originated from the legendary BMW M1 and delivered 218 bhp. The 635 CSi reached a top speed of about 228 km/h. It accelerated from 0 to 100 in just 6 seconds. Its popularity is reflected in the production figures: over 45,200 of the 635 CSi rolled off the line.

The successor to the Ferrari 360 Modena has been in production since autumn 2004. The new car from Maranello is based on the 360 Modena, but has undergone some obvious modifications. In particular the large air intakes are striking. The rear echoes that of the Enzo Ferrari cars. The new 4.3 litre V8 engine develops a satisfying 490 bhp at 8500 rpm. This luxury sports car shoots from 0 to 100 km/h in a mere 4 seconds. It has a top speed of 315 km/h. Five different driving programmes, from "normal" to "racing" mode, can be selected. The 250 GTO, that is still regarded as one of the finest of all Ferraris, was designed with the primary aim of suitability for private use, but at the same time for winning races in the three-litre class. The Gran Turismo body shape was aerodynamically optimised and resulted in a perfect combination of suitability for purpose and beauty. The front of the 250 GTO was particularly attractive due to the three cooling vents for the 2953 cc engine. The 250 stood for the capacity of one of the 12 engine cylinders, the O for omologato (= type approved), the FIA approval for races in the GT class. The GTO was shown for the first time in 1962. Thanks to its 300 hp engine and good aerodynamics it achieved a speed of about 280 km/h with acceleration from 0 to 100 in just 5.6 seconds. For three whole years (1962, 1963 and 1964) the GTO dominated its racing class in inimitable style.

The successor to the legendary Corvette C5-R took its place on the starting grid for the first time in 2005. Its lengthy development and numerous tests gave grounds to expect some exciting and successful races. Already at Sebring the C6-R, powered by a 7.0 litre 590 bhp small block V8 engine, showed what it was made of. Both there and on the 4,000 km track at Le Mans the C6-R took the title in the GTI class. This road-going supercar with the fabulous name was unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in 1984. The chassis and also the tried and tested boxer concept were taken over almost unchanged from the 512. However the appearance of the Testarossa differed conspicuously from that of its direct predecessors. As the widest passenger car then on the road it offered a much more spacious interior and with a length of just 4.50 m, its character was determined by the uncompromising wedge shape of Pininfarina's design. The flowing lines had clearly been dictated by the wind tunnel, as had the air intakes to the radiators in the rear mudguards and the air ducts integrated in the doors. This luxurious super sports car offered outstanding road-holding, excellent driving characteristics and excellent suspension.
