After successful trials, from 1970 the German army received 2,136 "Marder"
infantry combat vehicles. In combat the "Marder" accompanies the tanks
on the battlefield. The mechanized infantrymen who sit in the rear troop compartment
carry out their battle mission both mounted and dismounted. They can jump on
and off quickly through large rear hatch. To meet the increasing threat form
modern combat vehicles such as the BMP-2, from 1989 onwards the troops had an
upgraded variant which was equipped with additional armour and an improved turret
among other things. This version, known as the "Marder" 1 A3, has
three hatches over the rear troop compartment. The sides were fitted with additional
stowing lockers and the original mantlets were removed. In an artillery battle
the commander can use the 20 mm DM 6 cannon (BMK) mounted above the turret,
a coaxial MG 3 A1 and the "Milan" anti-tank guided missile. The "Marder"
is fully equipped for night fighting. The crew of the "Marder" 1 A3
consists of commander, gunner, driver and up to six infantrymen. The 441 kW
6 cylinder MTU MB 833 Ea-500 diesel engine gives the vehicle, with an approx.
weight of 33,500 kg, a max. speed of 65 km/h.

drive LUCHS (Lynx) is well armoured, has NBC protection and a special feature
of this vehicle is a station for a second rear-facing driver. The vehicle that
was upgraded with an improved ammunition feed system was given the designation
LUCHS A1. Up until the first combat capability upgrade to the LUCHS A2 in 1985
(this included the incorporation of thermal night vision equipment replacing
the original IR/white light searchlight), the LUCHS was fully amphibious and
could negotiate water obstacles independently with its rear-mounted propellers
and forward trim vane. It is armed with an Rh 202 Mk 20 mm machine cannon and
a 7.62 mm AA MG. The crew consists of front-facing driver, gunner, rear-facing

Year/Period 1988
Origin D
Speed 105 km/h
The "Fuchs"
NBC reconnaissance vehicle was introduced into the Federal German Army in 1988
and serves for the detection of nuclear and chemical warfare agents. The special
shape of the so-called NBC rear enables samples to be taken and areas of contaminated
ground to be marked from the interior while maintaining overall NBC protection.
The crew consists of a commander, a military driver and two other soldiers as
operatives. The vehicle has a combat weight of 17,000 kg and reaches a top speed
of 105 km/h. Since 1997 about a third of the vehicles used by the German army
have had their combat capability upgraded with a weather station and GPS navigation
system. From 2002 to 2003, 6 German army "Fuchs" NBC reconnaissance
vehicles were used during Operation Endurance Freedom in Kuwait. The "Spür-Fuchs"
is currently in service with the ISAF in Afghanistan. Its performance makes
it a very desirable acquisition for other nations.

Since 1979 the Federal German
Army has introduced 2,125 Leopard 2 battle tanks. Since 1994 a first batch of
225 Leopard 2s have been upgraded to armament level A5. These vehicles received
improved passive protection with wedge-shaped add-on armour modules on the turret,
an electrical weapon stabilisation and aimisystem, a GPS vehicle navigation
system and a rear-view camera at the back. The Leopard 2 A5s were handed over
to the troops at the end of 1995. Since 2001 the vehicles have been completely
upgraded to armament level A6, with a 120 mm L55 cannon that is approx. 1.30
m longer. In addition, further development of the ammunition should considerably
improve the first round hit probability. Another 70 tanks will be equipped with
improved mine protection and stored in readiness for use.

(East German army designation: armoured infantry vehicle SPW-70) the mechanized
infantry units (armoured infantry) have a fast all-terrain vehicle equipped
with a high dismount capability and good armament. It takes the mechanized infantry
close to the enemy in safety and they can then dismount through a hatch between
the 2nd and 3rd wheels or fire at external targets through firing ports. The
BTR-70 was widely distributed in the Soviet Union and its successor states and
from 1979 onwards the East German army received 1266 vehicles of this type.
After the dissolution of the East German army these saw service with the UN
in the Balkans.

At the beginning of the Russian campaign, the T-34 came as a shock to the German
troops. It perfectly combined manoeuvrability with armoured protection and fire
power. The 1943 model had a 76.2 mm cannon with 100 rounds of ammunition. It
had a weight of 31 tonnes and the engine delivered 500 hp, giving it a maximum
speed of 58 km/h. Fortunately for the German tanks, however, the Russians continued
to apply outdated tactics, in addition to which the T-34/76 had minor defects.
Despite this the Germans were only able to seriously challenge the T-34 with
the development of the Panther and Tiger tanks.

Half-track Vehicles of the Wehrmacht
Year/Period 1944

Engine capacity 80 kW
Speed 40 bhp
Weight 15 t
The development of the heavy German army tractor (s.W.S.) began in 1942 as
a replacement for the 5 tonne half-track truck (Sd. Kfz. 6). The approx. 1000
vehicles built were mainly used with a platform superstructure as a supply vehicle
for the troops. By the end of World War II dozens of vehicles were also equipped
as a self-propelled mount for the 3.7 cm Flak 43 gun. In addition to the additional
protective armour for the engine and driver's cab, these vehicles had a reinforced
chassis to bear the weight of the anti-aircraft gun and the munitions. The further
improved 3.7 cm Flak 43 gun delivered from 1944 onwards weighed only 1,392 kg
and the practical firing speed was increased to 150 rounds per minute.

Engine capacity 48 kW

Weight 5,5 t
The RSO (Raupenschlepper Ost = caterpillar tractor east) was specially developed
by the Steyr company between 1941 and 1942 for use by the German army as a tractor
and transport vehicle on the Eastern Front. In order to increase production
capacity, orders were placed with other firms, but instead of the standard metal
driver's cab these had a simplified wooden cab (type RSO/03). By March 1945
therefore 27,663 vehicles had been issued to the troops. In addition to Russia,
the RSO was used by mobile anti-tank units as a tractor for the 7.5 cm Pak 40
to defend against the threatening Allied invasion in northern France. The 7.5
cm Pak 40 developed by Rheinmetall-Borsig in 1939 was in fact a further development
of the 5 cm Pak 38 which took over some of its essential elements such as the
splayed gun mount, the double walled protective shield and the muzzle brake.
The 7.5 cm Pak 40 was the standard anti-tank cannon used by the German army
on all fronts

Type description battle tank
The Soviet T-72 counts as one of the most important Soviet battle tanks in addition
to which it was distributed world-wide. It stood out due to its innovations,
reliability and above all its powerful weapons system. The T-72B that appeared
in 1985 was further developed by stronger and more effective turret armour.
In addition the T-72B now had the capability to fire type "9K120 Svir"
guided missiles. Later it was also fitted with additional protection in the
form of so-called EDZ (explosive reactive armour) units. These explosive charges
could reduce or totally prevent the penetration of warheads.

manoeuvrability with an excellent 100 mm D-10 Cannon, thus enabling it to successfully
combat the new German tanks (Tiger and Panther) in World War II. The first of
at least 2500 vehicles made went into service in January 1945, in addition to
which they were used as tank destroyers for many years after the war ended,

The new type Sherman M4A1
was introduced in January 1944. Despite an improved 76mm gun and a completely
new turret, the armament continued to be deficient so that the front end and
sides would frequently require additional protection. Thanks to their superior
numbers and good manoeuvrability, the American Sherman managed to stand up to
the German tanks. This tanks has been deployed in many war theatres including
Trou-de-Bra in Belgium on 03.01.1945 with the 2nd battalion of the 32nd US tank
regimet.

After the massed appearance of the Soviet T-34 the Germans developed the V "Panther"
armoured combat vehicle (Sd. Kfz 171) which was used for the first time as version
D in 1943. The necessary imporovements gave rise to version A at the end of

the 44,800kg heavy Panther with a max. speed of up to 55 km/h. It was crewed

T-34/85 Soviet Armoured Combat Vehicle model
The T-34 armoured combat vehicle, which was introduced into
the Soviet Army in 1940, was made in large numbers and is one of the best known
tanks of the World War II. For the conditions obtaining at that time, it was
an outstanding combination of armoured protection, fire power and manoeuvrability.
The German side was unable to produce a comparable opponent to the T-34 until
1943 with the Tiger and the Panther.
