The Antonov An-124 is still
the largest production aircraft in the world. It was developed as a strategic
long-range military transport for the Soviet armed forces. Since its first flight
on 26th December 1982, the An-124 has set a whole series of new payload records.
It has a maximum take-off weight of 405 tonnes with a payload of 150 tonnes.
Noteworthy design features are the nose, which hinges upwards, and the large
rear loading doors to enable simultaneous loading and unloading. The landing
gear with 24 wheels also enables it to land on landing strips with poor surfaces.
In addition to the gigantic hold, the upper deck of the An-124 can seat 88 passengers.
The then Aeroflot also received a whole range of An-124s for the civil transport
of heavy goods, although it was primarily used for transporting military loads
for the Soviet armed forces. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, most
of these aircraft were used in Russia by the new Aeroflot, the Volga-Dnepr Airline
and Polet. As there is hardly any competition to the An-124 as a freighter,
there is naturally great demand from western firms and armed forces, including
the Federal Germany army. An-124s have also been operated by other airlines,
one of the first being Heavy Lift, based in England, which operates as a freight
carrier. More recently chartered An-124s have often made the headlines when
they were used for humanitarian missions. Many details!

Engine capacity 2 x 4553 kW
Speed 660 km/h
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Federal German Armed Forces in 2006,
an Atlantic with an unusual special livery in the German colours was with MFG
3 Nordholz. For over 30 years the Breguet Atlantic weapons platform has been
in the front line of maritime patrols. This 12-seat sea reconnaissance plane
offers an outstanding range (7,970 km) and a long period of time in the target
area. It is used for a variety of duties, such as anti-ship warfare, reconnaissance,
SAR duties and supply flights, but it was designed primarily for anti-submarine
defence. The Atlantic was also the first military aircraft to be made from design
to production as a multi-national project. Following the maiden flight on 21st
October 1961 the first machines were delivered to France and Germany in December
1965. The French naval air force received 40 machines split between 3 squadrons,
whereas the 20 German Atlantics were used at MFG 3 Nordholz. The Dutch naval
air force used 9 Atlantics with 321 Squadron. For anti-submarine defence the
Atlantic is equipped with American avionics whereas the Thomson-CFS track-while-scan
radar is supplied in France. With a total flying time of about 18 hours the
Atlantic can patrol a very wide sea area and attack enemy targets with torpedoes
located in a weapons bay beneath the fuselage.

Type description four-engined heavy-duty aircraft
Year/Period 1941
Origin D
Engine capacity 4 x 1.251 kW
Speed 440 kph
The Ju 290 was the only four-engined heavy-duty aircraft used by the Luftwaffe
in World War II and was the forerunner of the subsequent transatlantic civil
aircraft. In the winter of 1941 the German army encountered the problem of maintaining
supplies in sufficient quantities to the combat units. The only way out was
the immediate development of the available 4-engined Junkers Ju 90 into a larger
and more up-to-date military transport under the designation Ju 290A. One of
the features of the Ju 290 was that it had a cargo ramp (the "trapo-Klappe")
that could be lowered to enable even tanks to be driven up into the body. In
addition the Luftwaffe required a long-range reconnaissance plane to make possible
adequate surveillance of the allied convoys. The solution in this case also
was the Ju 290, that had a range of over 3,000 km and could remain airborne
for over 20 hours. Experience with the pilot-series of the new reconnaissance
plane was consolidated in the next series the A-4. After only four aircraft
had been built the A-4 series was replaced by the A-5, 11 of which were produced.
The majority of these aircraft were used by long-range reconnaissance unit 5
that operated over the Atlantic from Mont de Marsan. Some machines were transferred
to the newly formed special unit KG 200. In addition to extensive radio equipment
the Ju 290 reconnaissance plane also had the FuG 200 Hohentwiel ship search
radar.

The Focke-Wulf
Fw 200 was one of the world's first modern long range aircraft, although Winston
Churchill later gave the military version the nick name 'Scourge of the Atlantic'.
In 1939 the imperial japanese navy ordered a reconnaissance version of the civil
Fw 200 but this was never delivered. Instead, these machines formed the basis
for the newly formed Kampfgeschwader 40 (KG 40). The Fw 200C-4 from 1942 was
the Fw 200 built in largest numbers. It was used as a long range reconnaissance
plane and as a bomber against shipping targets. One of the main tasks of the
Fw 200 was the search for convoys and the transmission of these useful data
to german U-boats for a possible attack. Most Fw 200 were equipped with a Typ
FuG 200 "Hohentwiel" shipping radar, characterised by the typical
antennas on the nose. In the mean time, Heinkel had developped a remote controlled
guided bomb, that entered service as the Hs 293, with a 500 kg explosive nose
cone and a maximum speed of about 800 km/h. The Fw 200 also was used as a carrier
aircraft and designated Fw 200C-5/FK. The last version of the Fw 200 was the
C-8 series, from which just a few were built between autumn 1943 and the beginning
of 1944. In total, some 275 Fw 200 in different versions were built.

The Lockheed Orion came
into existence in 1958 as the successor to the P-2V Neptune. Its main applications
were long-range patrol flights over large sea areas and anti-submarine warfare.
In addition to extensive electronic equipment, a special feature of the Orion
is the long projecting MAD boom on the tail for tracking submerged submarines.
Eight torpedoes or depth charges can be carried in a weapons bay in the fuselage.
On 13th August 1962 the first P-3A Orions went into service with the US navy.
The P-3C is the most numerous variant of the Orion, equipped with four Allison
T-56-A-14 turboprops (4,910 shp each) enabling it to carry out very long patrol
flights. The Orion can carry additional torpedoes, mines or Harpoon missiles
on 10 external underwing weapons stations. In addition to the US navy numerous
European countries use the Orion. The Dutch navy received its first three machines
on 21st June 1981 and put them into service with 320 squadron in Valkenburg.
In 2004 the Dutch decided to dispose of the Orion - the main interested party
was the Federal German Navy who for a long time had been looking for a successor
for the Breguet Atlantic for MFG 3 "Graf Zeppelin" in Nordholz. The
German navy took over a total of 8 aircraft. In the summer of 2004 the training
squadron began to familiarise themselves with them at Valkenburg. The first
German Orions will officially go into service in mid 2006.

Type description Single-seat jet fighter
Year/Period 1944
Origin D
Engine capacity 1 x 800 kp
Speed 840 km/h
The Heinkel He
162 A-2 Salamander was one of the most unusual aircraft of World War II. Towards
the end of 1944, within a very short time, a fighter-interceptor had been built
that was both fast and easy to make. The specification for this single-seat
fighter was not issued by the German air ministry until September 1944. In just
69 days Heinkel, at Wien-Schwechat, had designed the new fighter, built the
prototype and made a successful maiden flight. Although aluminium parts were
still used for the fuselage, the wings were constructed in one piece out of
wood. Due to the air superiority of the Allies the whole of the production was
ultimately carried out underground. Between February and April 1945 a total
of 116 aircraft were built, most of which were delivered to 1 "Oesau"
Fighter Squadron at Leck, Schleswig Holstein. The notorious fuel shortages at
the end of the war prevented the extensive use of the He 162. The last one took
to the air on 4th May 1945 and ended by shooting down a Hawker Typhoon.
