The Bell UH-1 Iroquois - better know as the Huey - gained fame when it was used by the American forces in the Vietnam War of the sixties. It became an irreplaceable piece of modern battlefield equipment that saw rescue, troop transport and armed escort duty. When the heavy machine guns, rocket pods and nose mounted grenade launcher were introduced, the UH-1B and C received the nickname "Huey Hog". It was also flown by the Marine Corps as the UH-1E.

The two-seat Kamov Ka-52 Alligator prototype, based on the single-seat Ka-50 'Hokum', first flew in June 1997, and is one of the most advanced helicopters of its type. Designed for battlefield command and control, reconnaissance and target designation in support of helicopter group attack operatons, it has been tested with a large number of advanced electronics and targeting equipment. The Ka-52 is also heavily armed with a side mounted 30mm cannon and a large variety of rocket armaments and fuel tanks. The two crew members are equipped with unique rocket ejection seats, and the type is now in limited production for Russian special forces

The EC 145 is medium-heavy twin-engined helicopter that was developed in collaboration by Eurocopter and Kawasaki Heavy Industries. The EC145 can be operated with one or two pilots even on night flights. Its particular advantage as an emergency rescue helicopter is that it has a much longer range than other helicopters in its class. The EC 145 is therefore the first choice for transporting patients to distant medical facilities. The ADAC currently operates two helicopters of this type from locations in Mainz and Senftenberg in Brandenburg. The Rega Swiss rescue unit has 5 helicopters of this type in service.

The MH-53 is one of the largest and most powerful USAF heavy-duty battle-zone transport helicopters. It was developed as a technically upgraded J version of the CH-53 or MH-53H. This outstandingly equipped power package (all-weather with night-flight capability) received improved navigation systems, infra-red sensors as well as 3 mini-guns and heavy titanium armour and is used for the infiltration and removal of special operations forces. The modernisation was carried out to the s-called "Pave Low III" standard and includes an increase in take-off weight to 22.6 tonnes, long-range external tanks and an in-flight refuelling probe. MH-53J helicopters undertook numerous difficult missions during Operation Desert Storm including pilot rescue and guidance of the AH-64 Apaches for the destruction of enemy radar early-warning stations.

In the 1930s in the USA air combat tactics were devised that led to numerous new developments in dive-bombers. One of these developments was the Henschel Hs 123 built in 1935. However the German Air Ministry was only interested in acquiring a combat aircraft to support troops on the ground. Series production began in March 1935. The Hs 123 underwent its baptism of fire in the Spanish Civil War. During World War II the Hs 123 was mostly used in Russia and the Balkans. Due to its very robust construction and simple technology, the Hs 123 proved itself to be always ready for action even under the most adverse conditions.
