The four-engined Avro Lancaster was without doubt the most famous of all the RAF heavy bombers in World War II. From 1942 it formed the backbone of the night bombing offensives deep in Germany and gained its fame through the sinking of the Tirpitz and the destruction of the Möhne and Eder dam. The Lancaster was able to carry loads of up to 9,980 kg of bombs, the heaviest individual one being the "Grand Slam". It saw service up to 1945 in 68 RAF Bomber Command squadrons and flew over 156,000 sorties. Out of a total of 7,300 aircraft produced almost half were lost. Today only two examples exist that are still airworthy, one in Great Britain, the other in Canada.

Type description four engined bomber
Year/Period 1942
Origin D
Engine capacity 590 kp
Engine two Daimler-Benz DB 601 engines coupled together
Speed 700 bhp

The He 177 represented a revolutionary construction and was the only Luftwaffe four-engined bomber. It came into service in 1942. The He 177 was powered by two Daimler-Benz DB 601 engines coupled together and driving, via a differential gear system, a single propeller on a joint shaft. Overheating continually caused flame-outs in the engines and quickly gained the He 177 the nickname "German Fire Brand". Later the He 177 would be used primarily for the operational glide bombs. The Henschel HS 293A was the most successful guided missile used in the Second World War. It had a capacity of 590 kp thrust, a top speed of 700 km/h and an explosive charge of 3325 to 500 kg. To reinforce the defence weaponry of the He 177 the A-6 series was planned which would have a quadruple gun mount in the tail turret. In 1943 to test these attachments six of the available He 177s were equipped with an experimental electro-hydraulic tail gun mount (4 x calibre 13 mm MG 131). Despite all its problems the He 177, due to its capability, was a very popular aircraft with the crews.

The B-1B is still one of the largest, fastest and most advanced long-range USAF bombers and forms the backbone of the Strategic Air Command. This variable geometry wing bomber is capable of carrying an internal weapon load of 34 tonnes and 26 tonnes externally with a range of 12,000 km at service ceiling. The B-1B underwent its baptism of fire in "Operation Desert Shield" in the Iraq War. As the planned successor to the B-52, the B-1A had already made its maiden flight in 1977. The first B-1B was delivered to the USAF on 27.7.1985. The radar cross section of the B-1B is only 25% of that of the B-52 and the weapons load has been enormously increased. Three tiers of internal weapons enable Cruise missiles can be carried on a rotating suspension system as well as conventional bombs. The four GE F 101 engines each generate 13,608 kp with afterburner. The maximum speed at an altitude of 15,000 km is Mach 1.25.

The A-26 Invader was one of the few aircraft that were developed, built and used by the USA in World War II. Development began in 1940. Equipped with two Pratt & Whitney engines delivering 2000 hp each, the A-26 reached a top speed of 580 km/h and was therefore 128 km/h faster that the B-25. In October/November 1944 the USAAF 415th BG was the first unit to be completely equipped with the A-26 Invader. This unit also received a larger number of the A-26B with a fixed nose cannon. The Korean War that began in June 1950 caused to the transfer to Korea of the only (A)B-26 unit, the 3rd Bomb Group, still stationed in Asia, where the Invader also proved its worth. During the Vietnam War the French air force received 112 Invaders from stocks of machines that were no longer needed by the USAF.

Prototype Information: Martin B-26 Marauder
The B-26 was one of the best medium bombers of WWII and achieved the lowest loss rate of any American bomber flying over occupied Europe. However, the plane initially had a bad reputation with pilots who were not used to its demanding flying characteristics. A number of accidents involving new pilots resulted in design changes to lower the wing loading and reduce the landing . The Marauder was one of the fastest bomber of WWII with a top speed of over 300mph and a range over 1000 miles with 4000lbs of bombs.

With a total output of almost 11,000 aircraft the B-25 became the American medium bomber of World War II. Built in response to a USAAF proposal for a medium bomber, the first prototype was already flying in January 1939. The outbreak of the Second World War in Europe accelerated the development of the B-25. The B-25B gained fame due to a bombing raid on Tokyo. On 18th April 1942 16 B-25Bs were launched from the aircraft carrier USS "Hornet" to carry out the "Doolittle Raids" on Tokyo. The successor to the B-25 D, the B-25J Mitchell III was the last production version and with a total build of 4,319, it was also the most prolific variant of the Mitchell. The role of the B-25 was changing at the same time as the aircraft in the Pacific were increasingly required to attack bomber targets. The medium bomber developed into a ground attack aircraft with a newly developed solid nose armed with 8 MGs. Together with its defensive weapons stations it had a total armament of 18 MGs. The concentrated firepower of these cannon versions gave rise to the name "Strafer".

The heavy American bomber B-17 is without doubt one the symbols of the WW2. Used from 1941 by the 8th air fleet and the RAF, this heavy four-engined bomber seemed an easy target for the German fighter planes. However, the remendous firing power of up to 11 machine guns in flexible positions or turrets turned the B-17 into fyling fortresses. The much improved B-17 F was produced from 1942 until September 1943 when the figure stood ar 3405 units. It served successfully util the end of the war. The four Curtiss Wright R-1820 engines delivered 1,200 PS each. Maximum speed 480 km/h, range 2,960 km, armaments 13 MGs, bomb load 7,850 kg.

The Su-24 was regarded by NATO as one of the most dangerous of the Warsaw Pact weapons platforms. Today the aircraft is the bomber that is most flown by the Russian forces and in the greatest numbers. After the prototype took off on its maiden flight in January 1970 the Su-24 gave the Soviet Air Force some decisive innovations. This tactical bomber can be used for both low and medium altitude supersonic flights by day and by night and, thanks to its robust undercarriage, is suitable for operation on unsurfaced runways. From 1974 the Su-24 was delivered to the armed forces in large numbers. The Su-24M with its improved combat capability went into active service for the first time in 1983. It was equipped with a new avionics system for use with laser-guided and remote-controlled weapons, a nose cone modified to take a new radar system and an in-flight refuelling probe that was extended immediately in front of the cockpit. It can carry up to 8000kg of disposable stores on 8 hardpoints under the fuselage and 4 external stations on the wings. From 1989 an export version, the Su-24MK, was sold to several states in the Near East. In total over 1,200 of the Su-24 were produced.

Origin GB

The most famous RAF heavy bomber of World War II was the Avro Lancaster, which went into service in 1942. Over 7,300 were built for RAF Bomber Command. One of the main targets of the RAF was to destroy the dams that supplied the Ruhr valley, the most important industrial area, with electric power. In order to make effective strikes on strong targets such as dams or barrages, a spinning dam-busting bomb better known as the "bouncing bomb" was developed. A new unit was set up especially for this attack, 617 Squadron, under the command of Wing Commander Guy Gibson. This attack with 19 Lancaster bombers took place on the night of 16/17 May 1943 under the code name "Operation Chastise". The first two dams, the Möhne and Eder were successfully destroyed but the other two, the Ennepe and Sorpe, withstood the attack.

Year/Period 1940

By the end of the First World War the German air force high command already knew that, despite the great success of the Junkers Ju 87B in many areas, it not longer satisfied the requirements. The armament to defend against enemy fighters was as inadequate as was the armour against firing from the ground. The Stuka needed to be completely upgraded and was now given the designation Ju 87D-1 and equipped with a 12-cylinder, 35-litre engine with take-off power of 1420 hp. The first Ju 87 D-1s came into service with the lst Group of 2 Stuka Squadron in Russia. To extend its capability to low flying missions in support of ground troops, from the middle of 1943, 1559 of the Ju 87D-3 were built. They had considerably more heavily armoured engine and cabin. The D-5 series differed from its predecessors in that it had a larger wing area with pointed tip to improve slow flying performance, a top speed of 409 km/h and could carry a load of 1000 kg bombs.
