Engine capacity 4 x 180.000 N
Speed 835 km/h Within the last few years, the C-17 Globemaster has become the
most important US Air Force multifunction transport aircraft. In addition to
world-wide supply flights the C-17 has become indispensable for transporting
the wounded out of crisis areas in Iraq and Afghanistan. Already in the 1970s
there were plans to replace the C-130 and later the C-141 also. In 1981 McDonnell
Douglas received the design order. The prototype made its first flight on 15.9.1991.
Officially the C-17 went into service with the 437th Airlift Wing out of Charleston
AFB on 14.7.1993. In the meantime eleven USAF wings have been equipped with
the C-17. The capabilities of the C-17 in terms of long-range flights and short
take-offs and landings on temporary airfields made it the ideal transport for
military, humanitarian and peace missions. It can carry up to 3 M2 Bradley or
one M1 Abrams tank with additional cargo. By the time it is due to go out of
production in 2010 the USAF will have bought 205 machines.

Skill Level 5

The Antonov An-124 is still
the largest production aircraft in the world. It was developed as a strategic
long-range military transport for the Soviet armed forces. Since its first flight
on 26th December 1982, the An-124 has set a whole series of new payload records.
It has a maximum take-off weight of 405 tonnes with a payload of 150 tonnes.
Noteworthy design features are the nose, which hinges upwards, and the large
rear loading doors to enable simultaneous loading and unloading. The landing
gear with 24 wheels also enables it to land on landing strips with poor surfaces.
In addition to the gigantic hold, the upper deck of the An-124 can seat 88 passengers.
The then Aeroflot also received a whole range of An-124s for the civil transport
of heavy goods, although it was primarily used for transporting military loads
for the Soviet armed forces. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, most
of these aircraft were used in Russia by the new Aeroflot, the Volga-Dnepr Airline
and Polet. As there is hardly any competition to the An-124 as a freighter,
there is naturally great demand from western firms and armed forces, including
the Federal Germany army. An-124s have also been operated by other airlines,
one of the first being Heavy Lift, based in England, which operates as a freight
carrier. More recently chartered An-124s have often made the headlines when
they were used for humanitarian missions. Many details!

After the great success of the B-24 Liberator, the US Navy needed a
land-based four-engined combat aircraft with a long range. In 1943, after
many modifications based on the B-24N, a specific navalised version was produced
under the designation XPB4Y-2 Privateer. For this the fuselage was lengthened
by 2.13 m to accommodate the proposed electronic and radar countermeasures
equipment which can be seen in the bubble-shaped bulges on both sides of the
fuselage. These enabled the sea area to be scanned laterally under the machine.
In August 1944 the US Navy VPB-106 received the first 12 PB4Y-2 Privateers
series-produced for use in the Pacific. The French navy received its first
two P4Y-2S Privateers on 24th November 1950 for the wars in Indo-China, but
they were only designed for use as bombers. The RAF received 27 of the transport
version RY-3 which, however, were passed on to the Royal Canadian Air Force.
The Revell model contains components for the 3 main versions of the Privateer,
the PB4Y-2, RY-3 and P4Y-2 as well as movable gun turrets and crewmen figures.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Federal German Armed Forces in 2006,
an Atlantic with an unusual special livery in the German colours was with MFG
3 Nordholz. For over 30 years the Breguet Atlantic weapons platform has been
in the front line of maritime patrols. This 12-seat sea reconnaissance plane
offers an outstanding range (7,970 km) and a long period of time in the target
area. It is used for a variety of duties, such as anti-ship warfare, reconnaissance,
SAR duties and supply flights, but it was designed primarily for anti-submarine
defence. The Atlantic was also the first military aircraft to be made from design
to production as a multi-national project. Following the maiden flight on 21st
October 1961 the first machines were delivered to France and Germany in December
1965. The French naval air force received 40 machines split between 3 squadrons,
whereas the 20 German Atlantics were used at MFG 3 Nordholz. The Dutch naval
air force used 9 Atlantics with 321 Squadron. For anti-submarine defence the
Atlantic is equipped with American avionics whereas the Thomson-CFS track-while-scan
radar is supplied in France. With a total flying time of about 18 hours the
Atlantic can patrol a very wide sea area and attack enemy targets with torpedoes
located in a weapons bay beneath the fuselage.

Developed initially
as a Strategic Long-Range Bomber, the Tu-95 was one of the most unique military
aircraft. The Tu-95RTs (NATO designation "Bear" D) variant was developed
for the Soviet Navy between 1959 and 1962 for use in the roles of electronic
reconnaissance and target tracking of aircraft, surface ships and submarines.
Mass production began in 1963 and from 1966 onwards the aircraft - in co-operation
with Soviet submarines - were an integral part of the Navy's Inter-Continental
Missile Attack System. Regular flights over the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans
enabled an almost continuous surveillance and tracking of NATO Maritime Units
as well as the ships of other Navy's. For over three decades the Tu-95RTs was
an Icon of the "Cold War" due to its frequent presence within the
vicinity of NATO Maritime Units. In 1990 the Naval Airborne Forces of the Soviet
Union had over 37 Tu-95RTs' available.

The Phantom F-4E/F
is still regarded as the workhorse of the western air forces. In addition to
use as a fighter, in the German air force the Phantom has a second role as a
tactical combat aircraft. Nowadays the operational Phantom only flies where
it all began, with Fighter Wing 71 "Richthofen". There where in 2009
the anniversary was celebrated appropriately to its status - with a specially
designed livery on an F-4F "50 Jahre JG71".

The Dornier Do 335 was the fastest propeller driven aircraft to be mass-produced
during the Second World War. It represented a brilliant concept for a multi-role
combat aircraft in which for the first time all the requirements had already
been planned during the design stage. The tandem arrangement of the engines
and the well-considered aerodynamics gave it a maximum speed of 763 km/h. The
first flight took place on 26th October 1943 in Friedrichshafen, when the Do
335 demonstrated its superior speed combined with very easy handling. The Do
335 was one of the few operational aircraft equipped with an ejector seat -
a feature only found in German aircraft. For pilot training a two-seat Do 335
was designed which - with suitably equipment - could also be used as a night
fighter. At the end of the war numerous Do 335's in varying conditions of completion
were seized by the Allies in Oberpfaffenhofen, only one of which still exists
today.

The A-10 is still
one of the most successful combat aircraft for close support/ground attack missions
and can carry up to 8 tonnes of weapons. It received the nickname "Flying
Cannon". In fact the A-10 was designed around one of the most powerful
American cannons - the General Electric GAU-8A Avenger - a seven barrel rotary
Gatling gun. The whole system, built as a single unit with barrels and attached
ammunition tank, weighs 1830 kg and is 6.4 m long. It carries 1174 calibre 30
mm shells each with a weight of 700 g. The pilot sits in a 408 kg titanium "bathtub".
The A-10 is a robust and powerful weapons system for ground attack with very
limited electronics. However it was missions in Kosovo and later in the various
warlike confrontations in the Gulf region on which the almost legendary reputation
of the A-10 was founded. Its performance potential was further enhanced by later
modification programmes to its improve its combat capability.

The Arado Ar 196 was
the best World War II floatplane. Its sphere of operations extended from Crete
via the Black Sea to the far north. In addition to coastal reconnaissance and
the attacks on small shipping connected with this it was also used to attack
submarines. By the summer of 1937 the first prototype of the Ar 196 was flying
and the first deliveries were made in 1939. From 1941 the actual main version
of the Ar 196 - the A-3 was supplied. This series had, among other things, a
three-blade adjustable propeller and better radio equipment together with more
powerful defensive weapons and two SC50 50 kg bombs. Most of the machines in
the Ar 196A-3 series went to the coastal flying groups as well as to various
naval reconnaissance groups and to the large naval units. Arado 196s were stationed
on the battleships "Tirpitz" and "Bismarck". The Ar 196
was also used ever more extensively for air/sea rescue. Up to October 1944 a
total of 435 had been built.

The F-16 counts as
one of the most successful combat aircraft in the world. In the mid 1990s a
Mid- Life Update (Mlu) modernisation programme started for the European F-16,
which would give the machines improved combat capability. The Belgian air force
"31 Tiger Squadron", one of the most active and outstanding squadrons
within the NATO air defences, organised the NATO Tiger Meet 2009 in Kleine Brogel.
Specially for this event, an F-16 was fully painted in a striking tiger livery,
the design and execution of which was created and executed by Johan Wolfs and
Peter Verheyen. "31 Squadron" has now arranged the 7th Tiger Meet
and received a legendary 7 "Silver Tiger" awards.

The Tornado is one of the most important NATO combat aircraft
and, due to its modern electronics and outstanding flying characteristics,
it forms the backbone of the European air defences. The reconnaissance squadron
51 "Immelmann" regularly takes part in the so-called NATO Tigermeets,
in which members of the NATO Tiger Association put their experience and skills
to the test in major exercises. Of course aircraft dressed in special livery
also participate. In 2009 AG 51 took part for the first time with a specially
painted "kite". On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of tactical
air reconnaissance, the designer dreamed up something extra special. On the
top the heraldic animal of AG 51 "I", the panther, again appears
and on both sides of the vertical tail surface one sees the "Eye of the
Tiger".

The C-47 Skytrain
is without doubt one of the greatest legends in the history of aircraft. The
DC-3 was built in 1935 as a development of the DC-2, later to become the C-47
cargo transport. Almost all the air forces of the western world have had one
or more C-47s at some time and over 1,000 examples are still flying today
throughout the world. When in June 1948 the land routes to Berlin were blocked
by the USSR, it was the C-47 which, on 21st June 1948, brought the first supplies
into the blockaded former German capital. The RAF C-47 Dakotas flew regularly
between Wunstorf near Hanover and Berlin-Gatow. By this means up to 60 tonnes
of foodstuffs and other vital supplies were flown into Berlin. On 26th June
1948 the American Air Force also began to fly 32 Skytrains from Wiesbaden
to Berlin-Tempelhof. The blockade ended on 12th May 1949 and the last supply
flight was made on 20th September 1949.

Description
Breaking barriers, one historic flight at a time.
Test pilot Chuck Yeager
broke the sound barrier on October 14, 1947. This remarkable feat was made
possible by the Bell X-1, an experimental supersonic aircraft which was introduced
the previous year. Spanning only 28 feet (8.5 m) and measuring 31 feet (9.4
m) in length, the X-1's impact on the future of air and space travel proved
immeasurable. Kit features a fully detailed cockpit with an optional pilot
figure, an optional rocket engine, an opening cockpit door and decals with
