Type description Fighter
The original
project of the light weight fighter Messerschmitt Bf 109 dates back to the
year 1934. In early 1940, Messerschmitt started a thorough revision of the
Bf 109E in order to provide fighter units near The Channel with an aircraft
superior to the Spitfire. Compared tot the 'Emil' the new 'Fritz' offered
an increase in top speed of 65 km/h. The DB 601 N with state-of-the-art fuel
injection and single stage compressor gave the new 109 superior flying capabilities
at medium altitudes. The only unit on the English Channel, JG 51 received
some of the first Bf 109F-1 in October 1940. Besides Hans-Joachim Marseille,
major Werner Mölders, commanding JG 51 since the end of July, also was
one the most famous pilots on Bf 109F. Until the arrival of the Spitfire Mk.V
the 'Friedrich' was clearly superior. A total of 2400 copies of the Bf 109
were built until 1942.

The Hurricane is one
of the most renowned aircraft of the Second World War and was distinguished
for its robust construction. The Hurricane started a new era of British aircraft
building. The prototype made its first flight on 6th November 1936. In the spring
of 1940 the RAF Hurricanes met the 40 km/h faster Messerschmitt Bf 109 E-3 for
the first time over France. During the Battle of Britain in the summer and autumn
of 1940, the 32 RAF Hurricane squadrons with their slower but more manoeuvrable
aircraft brought down many more aircraft than the 19 Spitfire squadrons. The
aircraft went into production and between 1937 and 1944 over 14,200 were built.
Their reliability, stability and easy flying characteristics ensured that with
better engines and armaments they remained in service successfully until the
end of the war.

Year/Period 1990
Origin USA
Engine capacity 2 x 9.480 kp
Power Plant GE F-110-GE-400
Speed 2.486 km/h
For over 30 years
the F-14 formed the backbone of the US Navy air defence system and is one
of the most advanced carrier-borne weapons platforms. The F-14D was developed
from the modernization programme of the F-14A, the capabilities of which had
proved inadequate. The decision had already been taken in 1973 to equip an
F-14 with different engines. The experience gained finally gave rise to the
F-14D with the GE F-110-GE-400 engine, upgraded electronics, a new on-board
radar system and modified aerodynamics. Production of the Grumman F-14D began
in March 1990. On 10th March 2006 the aircraft from the last two Tomcat squadrons
(VF-31 and VF-213) returned from their last mission to NAS Oceana. All 22
Tomcats overflew the site in a crescent formation to the applause of hundreds
of spectators. The official "Tomcat Sunset" decommissioning ceremony
took place on 22nd September 2006 in Oceana. VF-31 was the last active squadron.

The development
of the multi-role high-performance Ar 240 started in 1938. The new aircraft
was destined to be a high-speed destroyer capable of penetrating far into
British air space. To achieve this Arado developed a pressurized cabin and
also a remote-control defensive weapon. From 1942 to 1944 various prototypes
proved themselves in service as fast reconnaissance planes over Great Britain,
the Mediterranean and on the Eastern Front. The V10 received an FuG 202 and
was modified so that it could be tested by Arado as a night fighter from October
to December 1943. Despite its superior performance on 16.2.1943 development
of the Ar 240 was suspended in favour of the Me 410.

The Beaufighter was a heavily armed, twin engined fighter first used in 1940
by the RAF against shipping targets. From 1943 onwards, for long range missions
RAF Coastal Command flew the final torpedo bomber TF.Mk.X version, equiped
with machine guns and rockets. Because of its quiet run-in to the target,
the Japanese gave the Beaufighter its nickname 'The Whispering Death'.

The P-38 Lightning was one of the most noteworthy fighters of the Second
World War and due to its enormous fire power it was used in the Pacific and
on the European front. From 1943 onwards, the P-38J was to become the first
really effective Lightning. Top speed 666 km/h. Extensive modifications were
already incorporated in the subsequent P-38L. This version also had the best
performance of all the P-38s; 3923 were built. In Europe it was used reinforced
for ground attack roles and received the nickname "Fork-Tailed Devil".
Towards the end of the war the P-38M was converted to a night fighter with
nose-mounted radar.

The new F/A-18E Super
Hornet is the latest US Navy fighter and strike aircraft and replaces both
the F-14 and the F/A-18C. Shortly after going into service with the first
squadrons in 2002 it was flying successful combat missions during Operation
Enduring Freedom and in Iraq. By the use of JDAM and laser-guided bombs it
can attack enemy targets much more accurately and also has an extensive arsenal
of guided missiles of the latest generation. The F/A-18E is in practice a
completely new aircraft: the whole fuselage is 30% larger than that of the
F/A-18C. Further modifications include more powerful engines, 33% more fuel
capacity and a longer range. The operating radius when on the attack is 40%
greater than that of its predecessor. 8 tonnes of weapons and fuel tanks together
with ECM pods can be carried on 11 hardpoints.

The A-26 Invader was one of the few aircraft that were developed, built and
used by the USA in World War II. Development began in 1940. Equipped with two
Pratt & Whitney engines delivering 2000 hp each, the A-26 reached a top
speed of 580 km/h and was therefore 128 km/h faster that the B-25. In October/November
1944 the USAAF 415th BG was the first unit to be completely equipped with the
A-26 Invader. This unit also received a larger number of the A-26B with a fixed
nose cannon. The Korean War that began in June 1950 caused to the transfer to
Korea of the only (A)B-26 unit, the 3rd Bomb Group, still stationed in Asia,
where the Invader also proved its worth. During the Vietnam War the French air
force received 112 Invaders from stocks of machines that were no longer needed
by the USAF.

Year/Period 1942
Origin D
By the end of World
War II, the brothers Reimar and Walter Horten were two of the best-known designers
of flying wing aircraft in Germany. They brought their experience in this field
into a special unit which, as Sonderkommando 9, was responsible for the development
of tailless all-wing aircraft. The development of the machine known as the Horten
Ho IX, equipped with two BMW 003A-1 jet engines began in 1942. Whereas the first
machines could only be made as gliders due to difficulties with the jet engine,
the second prototype received a Jumo 004B-1 engine. In 1944 the V2 made its
first flight reaching speeds of over 780 km/h. The production of the Horten
was transferred to the Gothaer Waggonfabrik and the designation was changed
to the Go 229. The first machine from the Gothaer Waggonfabrik, the Go 229 A-O
V3 received a Jumo 004-C engine.

RF-4E Phantom Tigermeet
The Phantom was one of the most powerful and versatile aircraft of the nineteen
seventies and eighties. It was in service in eleven countries including 5 NATO
states. The German air force flew 273 of these "Hot ovens", out of
a total build of 5,000. The prototype of this fighter interceptor flew for the
first time in 1958. Derived from the RF-4C, the RF-4E version went into service
with the German air force in 1971. It was then the most powerful tactical reconnaissance
plane of the western world. The 88 reconnaissance planes in the Federal German
air force were stationed at Leck (AG-52) and Bremgarten (AG-51). The AG-52 from
Leck attended the NATO Tigermeet in 1984 in this particularly striking special
livery.

Engine capacity 1250 kW
Speed 710 km/h
In March 1944
the design office of the Blohm & Voss Flugzeugbau GmbH submitted to the
RLM a new design for a single-seat multi-role aircraft with an asymmetrical
lay-out. It was very similar to the earlier BV 141 but they proposed a jet
engine to achieve a higher speed and improved flying characteristics located
in a nacelle beneath the cockpit. In addition to reconnaissance this plane
would also have been usable as a heavy fighter and ground attack aircraft.
The two MK 103s and the MG 151/20s mounted underneath in the cockpit nacelle
would have given the aircraft superior fire power to any Allied aircraft.
However the project was discontinued shortly before the war ended.

The MiG 21F-13
is considered to be the most successful and famous combat aircraft of the jet
age. No other military jet was built in such great numbers (over 12,000) or
saw action in as many wars as the Mikojan-Gurewitsch MiG 21. With the start
of series production of the MiG 21F-13 (NATO-Code Fishbed C) at the beginning
of 1960, large numbers of the new Soviet Mach 2 fighter were built for the first
time. The DDR (German Democratic Republic) was one of the first countries outside
the USSR to receive the new fighter with the first 76 aircraft arriving in the
summer of 1962. In 1963 Finland became the first non-Warsaw Pact country to
buy the MiG 21. The first German Cosmonaut, Sigmund Jähn, later to become
Major General Sigmund Jähn, flew an F-13 during his active service.

Origin F
The Mirage F1 all-weather
fighter interceptor flew for the first time on 23rd December 1966 and reached
a speed of over Mach 2. Compared with the Mirage III it has considerably better
manoeuvrability and improved take-off and landing characteristics. The performance
data of this new French fighter interceptor also impressed the military in many
other countries, giving rise to extensive export business. Like hardly any other
modern combat aircraft the Mirage F1 C was used in numerous theatres of war,
including Operation Daguet in the 1990 Gulf War. A total of 731 machines were
built, of which 251 went to the French Air Force and 480 machines went for export.
One of the finest, the "Tiger F1", was the one from the EC 5/330 based
at Mont de Marsan that went to the Tiger Meet in Beja, Portugal in 1996.

Type description heavily armed combat aircraft
Year/Period 1981
Speed 975 km/h
The Su-25 is an
armoured, heavily armed, ground attack aircraft that was developed to counter
the American A-10 "Thunderbolt II". It went into series production
at the Tbilissi Works in 1981. The Su-25 gained a reputation as an unusually
robust aircraft that could be used without difficulty on unsurfaced runways.
With a turning radius of 450-500 mm the pilot can keep a continuous eye on the
combat zone and quickly put his weapons into effective use. Its great versatility
as a weapons platform (max. load 4.3 tonnes) enables it to combat ground positions,
tanks, radar installations, sea targets and helicopters. Maximum speed 975 km/h.
Compared with other Soviet combat aircraft the Su-25 was the opponent most feared
by the Mudjahedin in the Afghan War.

The F-16 Fighting Falcon, with nearly 5000 built, is the most widespread
military aircraft in the western world. Originally designed as a light air
superiority fighter, it was impossible to foresee that it would become the
backbone of the American Air Force. Holland, Belgium, Norway and Denmark initiated
the European F-16 programme which led to the production of the F-16A and B
for the NATO countries from April 1978 onwards. The F-16B is a two-seat combat
trainer for F-16 pilots and has outstanding flying characteristics. In principle
the F-16B can carry the same external loads as the F-16A, typically 2 underwing
auxiliary tanks and Sidewinder missiles.

From 1942 onwards
German air space was an unlimited target area for the Allied bombing units.
In 1943 the design department of the Messerschmitt aircraft factory was working
on a further development of the Me 262 and the project was designated the Me
P.1099, a two seat, all-weather fighter which was to operate against the Allied
bombers. In 1944 a concept was produced for a heavy fighter with rear firing
attack weapons. The armament consisted of 2 rear firing MG FPL 151s, one forward
firing MG FHL 151 and two MK 103 Zs also rear firing. The power plant, as a
transitional solution for the unsuccessful Heinkel Hirth type HeSO11 engines,
was to be twin Junkers Jumo 004 C jet engines. The speed was to be between 870
and 930 km/h at an altitude of 6,500 m.

The F-22 is the
latest combat aircraft in active service with the US Air Force. This new fighter
offers multi-role capabilities and its potential performance is superior to
that of all competing contemporary types of aircraft. The F-22 will primarily
replace the F-15 in its current role. It has a higher speed, longer range, the
latest offensive and defensive avionics and good stealth characteristics. Equipped
with two Pratt & Whitney F110-P-100 turbofan engines each with 10,701 kp
thrust the F-22A, unlike the present generation of fighters, can reach a cruising
speed of over Mach 1 without afterburner. In addition to a 20 mm cannon it has
three internal weapons bays, located one on each side of the fuselage and one
in the ventral position. They can accommodate guided missiles or GBU-32 bombs
of the new JDAM generation. Due to its design and capabilities the F-22A is
regarded as the "Premium Fighter" by the USAF and will also replace
the F-117A Night Hawk. The 183 Raptors delivered to date are mainly in service
with 1st Fighter Wing in Langley, Virginia, in addition to Elmendorf and Tyndall.

Fleet Air Arm capable of both combat and search operations. The Gannet AS went
into service with the FAA in January 1955 and was stationed on aircraft carriers.
In 1958 the newly formed Federal German Navy received 15 of the more powerful
Gannet AS4s that were equipped with a 3,035 shp engine. In June 1966 the Gannet

Engine capacity 12020 kp
Speed 2237 bhp
In 1955 by Republic
in the USA a heavy fighter-bomber was developed, capabale of carrying a heavy
bomb load at low altitudes - the F-105 Thunderchief. The needs of the US Air
Force made a two seater version necessary, designated F-105F. During the Vietnam
war special aircraft were needed to fight the North Vietnamese missile sites
and their guidance radars. The US Air Force reacted by using the available aircraft
and updating them with search electronics to detect and attack SAM sites in
a program called "Wild Weasel". The F-105F was equiped with state
of the art electronics, carried mostly on outboard stations under the wing.
It was designated EF-105F. Attacking enemy missile sites meant using a special
missile, the AGM-45 Shrike that guided itself into the radar site by riding
the enemy radar beam. Since the electronics were carried under the wing, the
usefull load was limited and therefore the equipment was housed in semi-cicular
pods on both sides of the fuselage, giving the F-105G version its typical appearance.
Top speed was Mach 2.15 at 11.600 m; range 3.330 km.

In the summer of 1944 the German air ministry decided to produce a night fighter
version of the AR 234 B-2 jet bomber, the Ar 234 B-2/N. A modified "Magirus"
bomb was mounted on the underside of the fuselage together with two forward
firing MG 151/20 guns and a rear facing place for the radio operator behind
the 2nd fuel tank. The electronic equipment comprised one "Neptune"
and one "Naxos" radar plus additional night flying equipment. By 2.12.1944
the first plane had been cleared for flying with full night fighter equipment
and made its first flight on 10.12. By 2.12.1944 in Oranienburg two night fighter
test units had been set up in parallel and the first revised version of the
AR 234 B2/N was allocated to the "Bisping Special Commando". The trials
by the unit that had in the meantime been renamed "Commando Bonow Ar 234"
ended after a heavy bombardment of Oranienburg on 10th April 1945.

Year/Period 1999
Origin USA
The Super Hornet
is the latest US Navy fighter and attack aircraft. Shortly after going into
service in 2002 it flew successful strike missions in Iraq. Most Tomcat fleet
defence squadrons have now been equipped with the two-seat F/A-18 F variant
in its role as air-superiority fighter. In addition to its fighter/bomber role
the F version will also be used as a tanker. Through the use of laser guided
bombs it can acquire enemy targets much more accurately and also has an extensive
arsenal of the latest generation of guided missiles. The F/A-18 F is in practice
a completely new aircraft. The whole airframe is 30% larger than that of the
F/A-18 D. Further modifications include more powerful engines (GE F414 each
with 98 kN thrust), more fuel capacity and a longer range, together with larger
upgraded cockpit displays and the new APG-79 radar. Its operational radius for
attack missions if 40% greater that that of its predecessor. 8 tonnes of weaponry,
fuel tanks and ECM pods can be carried on 11 external hardpoints.

an air superiority fighter, it has an outstanding performane range and, with
its AW G-9 fire control radar, can fire its AIM-54 Phoenix guided missiles at
up to six targets simultaneously. The prototype was already in the air in 1970
and was thoroughly tested by Navy Test and Trial Squadron VX-4 at Pt. Mugu,
before deliveries started in 1972. The initial P&W power unit was later
replaced by the more powerful GE F 110. Since 1973 more than 29 US Navy squadrons
have been using the F-14. The predominantly black painted F-14 "Vandy One"
of the Navy Test Unit VX-4 in Pt. Mugu (California) was a sensation in 1990.

The Bf 110 was one of the most versatile twin engine combat aircraft used by
the German Luftwaffe in World War II, which was produced in greatest numbers.
Predominantly used as a fighter-bomber, it was also particularly successful
as a night fighter, as it had been designed from the outset as a long-range
twin-engine fighter with a two-man crew. In 1942 a new series came into existence,
the Bf 110 G, with new and more powerful type DB 605 engines. Production was
delayed by delivery difficulties with the engines. When in November 1942 the
series finally went into production, it was designated the G-2. Extensive trials
were carried out with the G-4 version that was originally intended as a night
fighter, including new weapons systems, such as the WT 151 pod under the fuselage
or the WGr21 rockets under the wings, that were then added onto the G-2 also.
In this configuration the Bf 110 was used as a destroyer to defend the Reich
against the American bomber units.

Apart from the
Bf109 the Spitfire is the best known and most renowned fighter plane of the
Second World War, with a total build of over 22,500. Numerous improvements and
upgrades meant that it was continually becoming more powerful. In 1941 the German
air force put into service the Focke Wulf Fw190A that proved its superiority
over the current versions of the Spitfire. Some rapid problem-solving gave rise
to the improvement of the airframe of the Spitfire Mk V by the incorporation
of more powerful engines of the Merlin 61 series with a four-blade propeller.
The earlier Mk IX variants were upgraded Mk Vs with different types of wings.
From 1944 onwards the Spitfire Mk XVI went into production with the Merlin 66
engine. The first aircraft of the Spitfire type IX went into service with RAF
No. 64 squadron in July 1942 and from then on proved to be an effective defence
against the Fw190 in both the European and the Near Eastern theatres of war.
The Spitfire was produced until the end of the war. A total of 5,739 of the
Mk IX and 1,054 of the Mk XVI were built and served with 79 RAF operational
wings, 23 Allied squadrons under RAF Fighter Command as well as 23 Canadian,
3 Australian and 9 New Zealand squadrons.

The F9F-5 Panther
was primarily known as the first-carrier borne jet warplane used by the US Navy
during the Korean War. It soon became clear that all the reconnaissance would
need to be transferred to jet-engined reconnaissance planes in order to keep
abreast of the conditions obtaining in both air and land warfare. First of all
the reconnaissance plane designated the F9F-2P came into use with the US Navy.
With the introduction of the more advanced F9F-2P Panther, at the same time
it was decided to built a small series of 36 machines designed as reconnaissance
planes for the US Marines. According to their configuration it was now possible
to cover three different spheres of operation: general air reconnaissance, photography/cartography
and special reconnaissance of coastlines. In May 1954, most of the F9F-5Ps were
stationed at MCAS Miami, Florida.

The F-4 Phantom
has remained in the service of many air forces for longer than any other modern
war plane - proof of its capability and robustness. It is in use in eleven countries.
A total of 5000 of this aircraft have been built. The prototype of this fighter
interceptor flew for the first time in 1958. Shortly after that it demonstrated
spectacular performances such as world records for a max. altitude of 30,040
m and a maximum speed of 3,085 km/h, with a total of 15 best performances.
Originally developed for the US Navy, the USAF later discovered the advantages
of this robust all-weather multi-role fighter. So the Phantom was used in large
numbers during the Vietnam War and later remained in service with the Air National
Guard over a long period of time. 635 of the F-4C were built for the USAF. The
F-4D received improved avionics and 773 examples were delivered.

The Rafale B
is the two-seat version of the Rafale C, a French Air Force omirole combat
aircraft. It is presented as an ultra-modern combat plane with a whole range
of electronic guidance facilities. The versatility of this weapons system
gives it a omnirole capability that fully meets air force requirements. The
Rafale is therefore capable of acting as a fighter- interceptor, reconnaissance
fighter or fighter-bomber. Due to its wide radius of operation, its enormous
stores-carrying capacity and its fire control accuracy and survivability,
the Rafale offers extraordinary mission effectiveness. In addition to defensive
air-to-air missiles, it also carries type GBU-12 LGBs (laser guided bombs).
The first Rafale Bs were delivered in December 2004 to the CEAM at Mont-de-Marsan
in the south of France, one of the NATO Tiger units that therefore also takes
part in the regular NATO Tiger Meets. For the 2006 Tiger Meet in Albacete,
Spain, one of the planes received a much-admired special livery.

the Tornado ECR was already in existence in 1985. It was given a passive sensor
to detect and identify radar beams and in addition to the obligatory defence
equipment it also had the AGM-88 HARM which would independently engage with
the target on the enemy radar beam detected. The only Luftwaffe Squadron equipped
with the Tornado ECR is 32 fighter bomber squadron in Lechfeld. In their missions
over the former Yugoslavia the German Tornados fulfilled a variety of important
tasks in the role also known as "Wild Weasel". A total of 428 missions
were flown without a single loss during which over 200 HARM missiles were fired.

The Tornado ECR is
one of the most effective NATO weapons systems for electronic combat and reconnaissance.
By 1985 the concept had been created for the Tornado ECR, which differs essentially
from the normal fighter/bomber, and has been flown by 1 Squadron JaboG 32 since
May 1991. Compared with the fighter/bomber version, the Tornado ECR was equipped
with additional systems and sensors to enable it to undertake its missions in
the field of electronic combat and tactical reconnaissance. The ELS (Emitter
Locator System) as a passive sensor can detect, identify and locate radar equipment.
To attack the targets the weapons system is armed with the AGM 88 B "HARM"
guided missile. Since 1996, 1 Squadron has been a fully active member of the
NATO Tiger Association and has continued to provide impressive proof of its
flying performance and commitment at various TigerMeets. Another sign of extremely
high commitment to the Tiger Association is the ever more ingenious special
liveries that are applied by the squadron by their own painstaking efforts to
impress their image on the public at each meet. The motto of the TigerMeet 2007
in Orland, Norway was Arctic Tiger. The idea originated from the designer A.
Kerner. The fuselage was totally covered with tiger stripes and the vertical
tail surfaces received more lavishly detailed airbrush work.

The Fokker Dr. I was
the most legendary aircraft of the First World War, although only about 300
machines were ever built. The most important contribution to the creation of
this legend was made by Cavalry Captain Manfred Baron von Richthofen, who, with
80 victories in the air, was the most successful fighter pilot of the First
World War and whose planes were painted red. This redlivery was the reason why
his English adversaries called him the Red Baron. On 21st April 1918 von Richthofen
was killed when his plane was shot down at low altitude by Australian machine
gunners. Although influenced by the design of theBritish Sopwith triplane, the
Fokker was a completely independent design. The Dr. I was extremely manoeuvrable
and was flown by many experienced pilots.

The Albatros D.V was
one of the most produced fighter aircraft of World War I. With the D.V the Albatros
Aircraft Works in Berlin-Johannisthal further developed the concept of the successful
D.III with minor modifications. The fuselage completely clad in plywood was
given an oval cross section and the wingassembly of the D.III was retained almost
unchanged. The first D.Vs were used atthe front in May 1917. Within a few months
the Albatros Aircraft Works had made 900 fighters of this type. In May 1918
almost 50% of all German fighter aircraft used at the front were D.V and D.Vas.
These machines were the best German fighters until the Fokker D.VII came out
in the spring of 1918.

The Heinkel He 219, one of the most effective German combat aircraft, was used
specially as a night fighter and was the very first aircraft to be produced
in series with ejector seats. Its capability at the front was tested on the
night of 11/12 June 1943 by Squadron Leader Streib of NJG 1 night fighter unit
out of Venlo, Holland, who on this sortie was able to shoot down five enemy
bombers. The He 219 achieved considerable success in combat against Allied bomber
units due to the incorporation of new weapons technology such as the rear-mounted
"Schräge Musik = hot music" (Mk 108 cannon).

By the end of the first
year of the war the German Luftwaffe command must already have known that
the Junkers Ju 87B was not longer capable of meeting the requirements in many
respects. The gradual improvement in the ground defences and the increasing
use of combat aircraft during the war led to the transformation of the Ju
87 into a fighter-bomber. The D version received a more powerful engine, new
aerodynamic fairing and stronger armour. Its new role was now primarily that
of ground attack, including anti-tank warfare with a 37 mm cannon. In the
spring of 1944 the work of converting the Ju 87 D-3 into tank destroyer types
G-1 and G-2 finally began.

The Lockheed F-117A is considered to be the first combat aircraft with stealth
characteristics that make it well nigh invisible to radar. The F-117s tested
in action are among the most outstanding and valuable USAF aircraft. When
they were introduced in August 1982 the USAF entered the "Stealth Age".
Subjected to the strictest secrecy for years, the veil was finally lifted
in 1988. With its low-angle construction and radar-absorbent skin it is very
difficult to detect. It operates primarily at night. Infra-red sensors and
laser target illumination, enable it to guide 1000 kg bombs (GBU Paveway II
or GBU-27) accurately onto the target. This was well and truly demonstrated
by missions in the Gulf War (the F-117 destroyed 40 strategic targets) and
in Kosovo. With the introduction of the F-22A, the F-117A was very quickly
superseded. At the beginning of 2007 the remaining 50 machines were retired
from active service and stowed away in air conditioned boxes.

The Bf 109
is one of best known Luftwaffe fighters of World War II, with a total production
of over 33,000 in a wide variety of versions. In 1943, in response to the massive
Allied bomber threat, the order was placed for a high-altitude fighter. The
prototype 109 K-4 was made in October 1943. With the K series all the previous
modifications to the G series were united in one aircraft giving an overall
improvement to its flying capabilities. For the new DB-605 D with large loader
and MG 131 a wider engine cowling without any protruberances was designed. The
engine cowling is shown without any protruberances. One MK-108 was used as an
engine-mounted cannon. The K-4 also had an aerodynamic fairing in order to improve
performance. The plywood equipment panel was redesigned. To save on aluminium,
some of the components were made of wood and sheet steel. In production all
the machines were equipped with an MW-50. Up to April 1945 about 1700 of the
K-4 were produced.

The Spitfire was
without question the best known British World War II fighter. It was subject
to continual further development throughout the war years, which was reflected
in a range of improvements to the airframe, engine and armament. This ultimately
led to a range with larger and more powerful Griffon engines. The Mk. XVIII
was the last Spitfire variant to go into service before the end of the war.
It has the bubble cockpit canopy and the back that sloped away from it of the
later versions, in addition to a modified and enlarged wing and various structural
improvements. This quickly led to the last production variants, the F. Mk. 22
and 24 that were identical apart from different electrical systems. The Spitfire
Mk. 22 was used in the late forties by 73 Squadron of the Middle East Air Force
in Malta and between 1946 and 1951 by 12 Royal Auxiliary Air Force Squadrons
in Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The Spitfire F.24 only served with RAF
80 Squadron. In 1949 the unit from the RAF base at Gütersloh in Germany
was moved to Kai Tak in Hong Kong. The armament consisted of four 20 mm Hispano
cannon and up to 454 kg of bombs or rockets could be carried beneath the wings.
The Spitfire Mk. 22 and 24 were both powered by a Griffon 61 engine with a capacity
of 2,050 hp and reached a maximum speed of 726 km/h.

The Phantom F-4E/F is
still regarded as the workhorse of the western air forces. Originally developed
for carrierborne use, it has a particularly robust structure that is also
capable of withstanding heavy damage in combat. Many records were broken by
the Phantom. For instance it is or has been in service with over 11 air forces
and a total of over 5000 was produced. As the previous versions F-4C and D
lacked a cannon, which proved a particular disadvantage for missions in Vietnam,
the upgraded version F-4E took into account the new requirements. As successor
to the F-104G Starfighter that had already been in service for over 10 years,
the German air force decided to buy 185 of the type F-4F Phantom which was
similar to the F-4E apart from minor modifications. On 7th March 1974 the
first two F-4Fs landed at Wittmundhafen/Ostfriesland the home of 71 "Richthofen"
fighter wing. In addition to deployment as a fighter plane the Phantom had
a second role as a tactical combat aircraft. Today the Phantom in question
only flies where it all began, with 71 "Richthofen" fighter wing,
which, according to its status, was the right place for the forthcoming 50th
anniversary celebrations to take place this year - with a special livery for
an F-4F "50 year old Phantom II". This special livery is a spectacular
representation of the nickname by which the Phantom is generally known today:
the Rhino.

Manfred von Richthofen, the "Red Baron" and his red Fokker triplane
made history in the Great War. Introduced to the western front in June 1917,
the General Staff released the Fokker Dr. I only after an extended test phase
and following approval by the flying ace Manfred von Richthofen. The Dr. I was
the most manoeuvrable of all the aircraft deployed at the time and achieved
high climbing speeds. The Oberursel radial engine (power output 110 PS) gave
the Dr.I a maximum speed of 193 km/h and enabled it to climb to 3000m in six
minutes. Two Spandau MGs were installed forward of the cockpit. All the pilots
in Richthofen's group flew red triplanes. Although the Dr.I was withdrawn from
the western front at the end of 1917, the Red Baron continued to fly this type
to bring down a total of 80 enemy planes before being shot down himself by Captain
A. Roy Brown in April 1918.

The Eurofighter is currently
the outstanding high-performance multi-role combat aircraft of the latest
generation. With a top speed of Mach 2.0+, the Eurofighter excels at both
long and short range air combat and also has ground attack capability. Thanks
to its low radar signature and the use of non-metallic materials, this aircraft
is barely observable by the enemy. The power of the weapons system rests on
a well-balanced combination of characteristics such as extreme agility based
on aerodynamic design together with high performance engines, armaments, sensors,
automated data management and minimum signature. The extreme manoeuvrability
of the Eurofighter is impressive. It is primarily a fighter designed to protect
the air space and to that end is equipped with a mixture of armaments such
as powerful short and medium range air-to-air missiles. For the extended air-to-surface
role the Eurofighter has a high external stores capacity and functionally
adapted weapons stations. The Eurofighter combines not only innovative and
advanced technologies, but is also an international programme of great political
and economic significance. 707 aircraft have been ordered so far. The first
Eurofighters officially went into service with the German air force on 30th
April 2003 with 73 "Steinhoff" fighterwing at Rostock-Laage. The
second unit to receive the Eurofighter was 74 "Mölders" fighter
wing in Neuburg, Bavaria. In future the Eurofighter will also play a major
role as a fighter-bomber, for example in Great Britain, where at the moment
for the dual role all the RAF Eurofighters are being converted to FGR 4.

paint necessary.Straight, flat wings allow the A-10 to carry a heavy load of
weaponry.
Twin turbofan engines are mounted outside and above the rear fuselage.

Two-seat all weather
strategic black spy plane. Electronic, optical, infra-red, and radar sensors.
Design configuration is a modified, tailless delta with a blended forward wing
called a chine, which acts as a fixed canard to produce lift and decrease drag
at cruising speed. First flown in December 1964, the Lockheed SR-71A spy plane
- nicknamed "Blackbird" - was the most dramatic aircraft to ever fly
the skies. Designed to be the ultimate "spy-in-the-sky," it is still
probably the fastest and highest flying jet plane ever built and was impossible
to catch before it was retired from service in 1990. Flying at such high speeds
and altitude, the pilots of the SR-71 wore protective flight suits similar to
what the astronauts use.

1/100 Easy Kit F/A-18E Super Hornet
Now in service
with the U.S. Navy, the single seat F/A-18E Super Hornet has replaced some
F/A-18C Hornets. The Super Hornet may look like an extension of the earlier
aircraft in the F/A-18 Hornet family, but it is an almost completely different
aircraft sharing little with the older F/A-18C Hornet except a similar shape
and name. It's longer and wider, with a broader wingspan and it's heavier
and carries more weapons over greater ranges than the F/A-18C.
Features: Easy
snap construction, pre-decorated plastic parts molded in color.
