The U-Boot type
VII-C is the best known German submarine from World War II. It was built in
large numbers and upgraded several times. This type represents the ultimate
high point of the submarine era. Equipped with four bow and one stern torpedo
the VII-C was a fearsome weapon. The task assigned to the German submarines
was trade warfare. They were designed to disrupt England's supply lines and
innumerable sunken ships bear witness to that. The "Grey Wolves" of
the Atlantic made war on escort convoys and hunted in packs. Accustomed to success,
however, the period from 1943 was devastating for the German submarines: the
hunters became the hunted. New search equipment tracked the German submarines
mercilessly and turned them into steel coffins for innumerable German submarine
crews. The type VII-C submarine illustrates the rise and fall of German submarine
warfare.

After the US Pacific fleet had been seriously weakened at Pearl Harbor, at the
beginning of the war in the Pacific much of the responsibility in the battle
against the Japanese expeditionary forces rested on the shoulders of the American
submariners. The submarines of the Gato Class were large fleet submarines that
had been specially developed for use in the wide expanses of the Pacific Ocean.
Due to their size and equipment they could remain in non-stop service for 75
days. Between 1940 and 1944, 77 Gatos were build at four different shipyards.
Together with the Balao and the Trench Class they formed the backbone of the
US submarine fleet. Most of these subs went to the Pacific, but a few were also
used in the Atlantic. These submarines were extremely successful. Not only did
they sink a large number of irreplaceable freighters and tankers, but they also
decimated the Imperial naval fleet. The most grievous losses were the aircraft
carriers Shokaku, Taiyo, Unyo and Taiho. Developed for use in the expanses of
the Pacific, the Gato was much larger than for example the German type VII submarine.
It had a length of 95 m, a beam of 8.20 m and a draught of 4.60 m. Its displacement
was 1825 tons surfaced and 2410 tons dived. The diesel engine gave it a speed
of 20.75 knots on the surface. This item does not ship outside of North America.

Based on the proven
design principles of the 209 Class of submarines, plus some of the innovative
features of the 212A class, HDW developed the 214 Class. It was eminently suitable
for a broad spectrum of applications, both in shallow and deep water areas.
Due to its flexible combination of sensors and weapons and the fuel cell power
plant that is independent of external air, the 214 Class is predestined for
missions against enemy submarines and surface vessels, reconnaissance and surveillance,
support for operational units and special missions. The fuel cell power plant
enables the submarine to remain under water for much longer. This new type of
engine and the reduction in the overall signatures ensure that the 214 Class
vessels are extremely difficult to locate. At present there are seven 214 Class
units under construction: four for the Greek Navy (built by the Thyssen Krupp
Marine Systems Werften HDW in Kiel and the Hellenic Shipyards in Greece) and
three for the Navy of South Korea (Shipyard: Hyundai Heavy Industries in Korea).
Technical data: Length: approx. 65 m - Displacement approx. 1,700 tonnes - Torpedo

With the Type XXI, Germany had the World most modern submarines
at this time. The ""Wilhelm Bauer"" had been taken into
service in February 1945 as Type XXI (U 2540) and assigned to the 31 U-Flottille.
The training period of the crew having been stopped by lack of fuel short
of the end of WW2, the U-Boot had been scuttled by its crew on May 4 in the
Flensburger F?rde. As the new Bundesmarine wanted to use all the still high
tech details of the boat, it was decided in 1957 to raise the wreck, and have
it refurbished to use for technical trials. It was fitted with the diesel-electric
propulsion designed for the future Class 201 which was under project, and
it received a newly shaped tower. It was then taken into service in 1960,
under a new name, ""Wilhelm Bauer"" (Class 241). Paid
off in 1968, it was reused once again in 1970 for trials in view of the future
Class 206. Damaged in a collision with a destroyer, ""Wilhelm Bauer""
was paid off for ever in 1982 and modified to become a museum submarine. The
50 parts kits for the ""Wilhelm Bauer"" include the original
tower. The main rudder and the diving planes are mobile. Radar mast, periscope
and snorkel tower can be assembled in raised position.

Navy in 1973 as the 206 class and in 1987 it underwent a modernisation programme

Starting mid-1943,
91 u-boots Type VII C/41 have been launched. By then, the conditions of the
battle had totally changed. The "wolfpack tactic" achieved then
seldom positive results against better protected convoys, especially with
the introduction of air umbrellas. With the aim of a better defence when surfaced,
the Type VII C/41 u-boots were fitted with a modified, larger bridge called
"large wintergarten (winter garden)" armed with two 20 mm flakzwillings
and one automatic 37 mm M42U flakkanone, which are reproduced with precision
in the kit. A swivelling snorkel mast (also swivelling in the kit) for fresh
air and fume exhaust, and four pressure boxes with 5-man floats were additional
typical of these boats. The use of better steel sheets allowed the maximum
depth to reach 250 metres. New parts are included, for the wooden deck planking
with engraved pressure boxes and the "Atlantic" type bow. The beautifully
detailed hull shows rivets and welding seams. Following u-boots can be reproduced
with the decal sheet: U 292, U 318, U 998 and U 1004.

1/72 HUGE US Gato Class Submarine
The Gato class
of submarine was the state of the art in American design at the start of World
War II and bore the brunt of the fighting against Japan during the war. They

in the Pacific. They were generally over 300 feet in length, which means our
new Revell 1:72 scale kit will be roughly 52 inches in length! You can expect
a massive, world-class model replica with at least 250 to 300 parts.
