Especially during the
fifties US Navy ice-breakers grew more important. The installation of scientific
stations at the North and South Pole made permanent en-route maritime support
at sea necessary - impossible without ice-breakers. Besides this the Burton
Island also served as a base for reconnaissance flights by helicopter, for
hydrografic and geological survey and for still more scientific programs.
High yield pumps transferring water in ballast tanks from one side of the
ship to the other kept the ship in continuous movement. Between 1948 and 1956
the Burton Island participated in 19 missions in polar seas.

Due to the absolute superiority of the Allied materiel at
sea and in the air, from 1944 onwards warfare at sea became ever more difficult.
The areas patrolled by the high-speed motor torpedo boats, the English Channel
and also the Baltic, were subject to ever more frequent air attacks by a numerically
superior enemy who specifically hunted high-speed torpedo boats. Consequently
the efforts of the crews were primarily concentrated on higher fire power
and speed as well as more effective air defence, that was considerably improved
by the feared four-barrelled Flak C38 anti-aircraft gun. At the beginning
of the war the Friedrich Lürssen/Vegesack shipyards developed this fast,
type of seaworthy torpedo boat that maintained its performance even in heavy
seas, had brilliant manoeuvrability and continued to be built until the end
of the war without major modifications. These torpedo boats, also known as
S-Boote, generally proved their worth on escort and protection duties, minefield
reconnaissance patrols and above all in combating surface units and enemy
submarines. They operated chiefly off the Dutch and French coasts, the English
coast and the Channel and also the North Sea and the Baltic and were also
used in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. The final version was the Type
S-100 that was produced after 1943 and can be regarded as the best high-speed
torpedo boat of its period.

In order to achieve optimum combat capability in sea areas with shallow
water and limited space, particularly manoeuvrable vessels are needed. The
7th Fast Attack Squadron of the German Navy has ten highly-technical fast
attack craft of the Gepard Class designed to meet these requirements. These
craft are used as patrol vessels and for the protection of shipping and coastlines.
For this they are equipped with four MM38 Exocet surface-to-surface missiles,
one GDC RAM surface-to-air missile system and one 76 mm OTO-Melara gun. Driven
by 4 diesel engines, these vessels reach a maximum speed of about 40 knots.
This kit consisting of 148 individual parts is distinguished, among other
things, by its authentic representation of all weapons systems, included the
minelaying system. The decals enable all ten of the vessels expected to be
in service up to 2021 tobe optionally represented.

In January 1937,
when the keel for a new Royal Navy battleship was laid, a new vessel came into
existence which with its concentration of 356 mm heavy artilleryin quadruple
turrets took English shipbuilding in a totally new direction. In 1938, the ship
was launched and named the King George V and in December 1940 she went into
service as the first of five sister ships, to be followed in 1941 by the Prince
of Wales and the Duke of York and in 1942 by the Anson and the Howe. In the
following war years these ships formed the core of the battle fleet and were
used in all theatres of war. The King George V had her baptism of fire duringthe
pursuit and ultimate sinking of the Bismarck. She then served in the North Sea
and the Mediterranean before going back to the shipyard in 1944. By the end
of the war she had undertaken missions in the Pacific, often together with the
US Navy. In 1958 the King George V was broken up.

The "Bismark",
at 42,343 tons was, for her time, the largest and most up-to-date battleship
in the world (next to the "Hood"). On 24th May 1941, in a sea battle,
together with the heavy cruiser "Prinz Eugen", at the pack ice frontier
of Greenland, with a direct hit by the 5th salvo from her 380 mm guns she sank
the largest British battle cruiser the "Hood". Launched on 14th February
1940 at the Blohm & Voss shipyard, Hamburg, together with the similar "Tirpitz"
she was the most up-to-date and prestigious ship of the German navy. With a
length of 251 m the top of the mast stood 52 m above the surface of the sea.
She was protected by a total of 17,450 tonnes of steel armour plating. The newly
designed heavy artillery fired 800 kg projectiles up to a range of 34.2 km and
were capable of penetrating 350 mm armour at 21 km. Although the "Prinz
Eugen" suffered no direct hits in the battle of 24th May, the "Bismarck",
which was damaged in the bow, made for a French harbour. In the subsequent pursuit
by British ships and aircraft, on 27th May 1941 a torpedo hit the rudder and
after being hit by the superior numbers of the Home Fleet she was disabled and
sunk in the Atlantic about 800 km off the French coast. Of the 2,092 men on

(Unterseeboot) Type VIIB The Type VII U-Boats, under the command of Admiral
Doenitz, were the principle German weapons in the Battle of the Atlantic. In
this battle, Germany hoped to cut off the convoy supply lines to Great Britain
and force the British to sue for peace. The U-Boats caused great havoc to the
Atlantic convoys during the early years of WWII but by the end of 1943 they
were outnumbered and outgunned. The Type VIIB U-99 was commanded by Kapitan
Kretschmer and sank 44 ships before being sunk herself by the British destroyer
"Walker". Most of the crew were taken prisoner.

Navy and has been deployed in many war theatres. Over the years she has undergone
several modernisation and upgrading programmes in respect of her defence, early-warning
and ship's systems. In October 1980 the Saratoga went into dry dock to undergo
an extensive service life extension or SLEP programm whren she received new
radar and communication systems, self-inflating rescue islands, new aircraft
take-off systems and 3 Phalanx defence systems, as well as Sea Sparrow anti-aircraft

The construction
of new battleships and aircraft carriers capable of speeds over 30 knots also
required modern new destroyers capable of up to 38 knots. Consequently in
January 1940 the General Ship Board responsible for these plans decided that
a new destroyer should be designed with a 127 mm main armament in five gun
turrets and 10 torpedo tubes. By the end of 1940 orders for 100 ships of the
future Fletcher Class were placed with 11 different shipyards. When the USA
came into the war in December 1941, the navy placed a further 75 orders. The
DD-445 USS Fletcher type called after Admiral Frank F. Fletcher was launched
on 3rd May 1942 from Federal Shipbuilding in Kearny, New Jersey. Unlike previous
US destroyers the hull of the ship was able to withstand much heavier loads,
so that the destroyer driven by two high-pressure steam turbines with a capacity
of 60,000 shp reached a top speed of 37 knots. The maximum cruising speed
under operational conditions was 32 to 33 knots. Modern radar equipment ensured
that she was also fully operational by night and in poor visibility. Some
parts of the superstructure were clad in 12 mm hardened steel armour increased
to as much as 19 mm armour plating in vital areas of the hull. Thanks to a
very conservative construction, a powerful power plant and extensive modern
radar and sensor systems, the ships of the Fletcher Class proved to be the
most successful US Navy destroyers in the 2nd World War.

The "Tirpitz",
52,900 t, was in her time the largest and most up-to-date battleship in the
world (apart from her sister ship the "Bismarck"). This 251 m long
ship was launched on 1st April 1939 from the naval shipyards in Wilhelmshaven.
but due to improvements and modifications had extensive technical and constructional
differences from the sister ship. The newly designed heavy artillery shot
projectiles weighting 800 kg up to a range of 36.2 km and could penetrate
350 mm armour at up to 21 km. After her first use in combat as the flagship
of the Baltic Fleet in July 1941, in January 1942 she was moved to Norway
in order to prevent an expected British invasion. From floating bases in the
fjords she operated against British convoys carrying war supplies to the Soviet
Union. But from September 1942 the Tirpitz was no longer operational due to
substantial damage caused by an attack by 3 British mini-submarines of the
X class. The Tirpitz was not seaworthy until March 1944. From April 1944 further
damage was caused by numerous British air attacks, so that the Tirpitz was
retired from service as a floating battery. Further British air attacks followed
until finally, on 12th November 1944, the Tirpitz suffered 2 direct hits in
an attack by 29 British bombers with heavy "Tallboy" bombs, following
which she capsized between the islands of Haakoy and Grindoy - 890 men out
of the crew of 2,608 survived.

H.M.S. Bounty
One of the most famous vessels in maritime history is the HMS Bounty, a sailing
ship that became known for the bold mutiny that took place on board. In 1787
Captain William Bligh was ordered by King George III to bring bread-fruit trees
from Tahiti to the West Indies in the Bounty. Captain Bligh ruled with an iron
hand and continually reduced the rations of his crew. On 28th April 1789 the
famous mutiny occurred. Bligh and 18 of his henchmen were set adrift in a boat
but, after a veritable odyssey of a voyage, succeeded in making their way back
to England. The rest of the crew decided to remain in the region and settled
on Pitcairn Island, far from the shipping routes. To prevent discovery, the
Bounty was ultimately burned by her former crew in 1790.

Year/Period 1817
Most sailing ships
achieved fame in seafaring history through sea battles, but some gained it through
exploration. On 27th December 1831, H.M.S. Beagle, a brig built in 1817, sailed
from Devenport, England on a five year expedition round the globe. At the invitation
of the Captain and naturalist Robert Fitzroy, the young natural scientist Charles
Darwin was also on board. The observations made by him during the voyage on
the evolution of life and the origin of species formed the basis of the Darwin
Theory, which made him one of the most important scientists of all time. This
historic voyage went via Brazil, Chile, the Galapagos Islands, Tahiti, New Zealand
and the Cape of Good Hope and back to England, where they arrived on 2.10.1836.
Many species were brought back with them as specimens of their revolutionary
findings.
