The most spectacular racing car and until now most powerful Audi ever is powered by a twin turbo charged twelve cylinder TDI engine with 5.5 litre cylinder capacity. The powerful power-unit offers over 650 horsepower and a torque in excess of 1100 Newton metres. The V-12 runs extremely smoothly and requires an injector pressure of around 2000 bar. Development of the diesel sports cars at Audi was looked upon as a great technical challenge partly because of the high torque and associated high power developed by the engine. The C9 was developed as part of a joint venture in which Mercedes-Benz supplied the engines and the racing car designer Peter Sauber the body. The racing car's monocoque was made of aluminium. The 5 litre V-8 engine (M 119) with a delivery of 900 hp was based on series engines to which two turbo chargers were added. The C9, capable of almost 400 kmph, celebrated its debut in 1987 in the 4th race of the WSPC in Silverstone. Throughout the season it completed a number of races as the fastest car, in Le Mans it recorded the fastest lap. As a result, the C9, with which Mercedes again participated in sports car racing from 1989 onwards, demonstrated what potential it had also for the years ahead.

The Porsche 962 was created in the prime of its predecessor, the very successful Porsche 956, to comply with the new IMSA rules that came out in 1983. The USA was an important market for Porsche, so work on the new sports car had already begun in October 1983. In the Porsche 962 the front axle was moved forward a few centimetres to meet IMSA requirements. Otherwise the 962 differed little from its predecessor. The 962 was used in both the USA and in Europe, where it was suitably equipped for Group C and was given the letter C. The Porsche 962 and 962 C were two of the most successful racing cars in history, offering according to equipment, 640 to 680 bhp and a speed of 380 km/h.

The 53rd Formula 1 car from Ferrari, works number 658, differs conspicuously from its predecessor. This fiery red racer has, among other things, new front wheel suspension, a longer wheelbase and differently shaped side pods. Only the light 95 kg, type 056 2.4 litre engine is reused. The 58th Formula 1 World Championship was characterized by the continual competition between Ferrari and Mercedes. In accordance with the FIA requirements for Group C in the racing sports car world championships, in June 1981 Porsche began to design a two-seat racing car. In this 956 C a high value was placed on the aerodynamics. Thanks to special air ducts a floor effect was produced that made extremely high cornering speeds possible. The six cylinder engine of the 956 with a capacity of 2.7 litres gave it a top speed of over 350 km/h at 620 bhp (from 1983 it became 640 bhp). The Group C era was to be a period of huge motor sports success for Porsche. In the early 1980s Porsche took numerous world championship titles, victories in the 24-hour races at Le Mans and long distance races with their dominant 956 C.
